When economic patriotism died Pat Buchanan agrees with the pope about ' the dark side of globalism'
“This is called slave labor,” said Pope Francis.
The Holy Father was referring to the $40 a month paid to apparel workers at that eight-story garment factory in Bangladesh that collapsed on top of them, killing more than 400.
“Not paying a just wage … focusing exclusively on the balance books, on financial statements, only looking at personal profit. That goes against God!”
The pope is describing the dark side of globalism.
Why is Bangladesh, after China, the second-largest producer of apparel in the world? Why are there 4,000 garment factories in that impoverished country which, a few decades ago, had almost none?
Because the Asian subcontinent is where Western brands – from Disney to Gap to Benetton – can produce cheapest. They can do so because women and children will work for $1.50 a day crammed into factories that are rickety firetraps, where health and safety regulations are nonexistent.
This is what capitalism, devoid of a conscience, will produce.

If there’s no need for economic patriotism, then there’s no need for patriotism of any kind.
I’ve got a better idea: let’s combine the the weakest strawman arguments we can, and attribute them to our opponents? It would be much more efficient.
Calling someone a national socialist is not the same as calling them a Nazi. Wherever did you get that idea anyway? Who said, “Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State"? That's right, a national socialist. This also sounds like something Pat Buchanan would say. He advocates for that very thing in just about every article he writes about economics.
I’m not saying it did. Just stating the fact that Pat Buchanan has always had a protective tariff state of mind.
I’m not for tariffs in the least. There is always retaliation, and you pay for it some other way. The EU just tripled the tariff on women’s denim trousers for some reason from 12% to 36%.
Free trade works to hire Chinese.
China’s unemployment rate is now what ours used to be.

So as long as we're talking about 'economic patriotism', how about we first start showing a little 'honest patriotism'. After all, so much of what people are calling their patriotism here is patently dishonest. Next we can all get together on moral patriotism, and then sane patriotism...

Hey, when someone creates a job it's his job and not yours. He can move it, destroy it, or make more of them. It's how it works when the means of production are privately owned. People have tried having jobs owned by the state but simply doesn't work and it just makes everyone worse off.
Anyone who wants to be in charge of what happens with a job is going to have to well, hire someone.
Or move.
Tariffs are a great idea but were even better 20 years ago before we stupidly funded the rise of China and Japan by buying their stuff. This helped them get ahead of us in many areas. The moment to strike was when we were dominant and should have had the nationalism, pride and cojones to keep it this way

Hey, I left the F out......give me credit for that.
But to the point, you have been on the “bring jobs back” harp for years, and yet, I’ve never seen you demonstrate any understanding of what a job is, why one is created, let alone why an owner would outsource jobs. I do think, at a certain point, it is time for you to demonstrate some of this (and maybe you have and I missed the posting) or go bring some jobs back yourself.
Until you do one of those two things, I dont’ see any cred on this issue. I’ve never employed anyone over seas, but I’ve employed thousands of people in my lifetime, and I can easily see why jobs leave. I really do not think you understand why they do.
