The issue of "who's minding the kids" is now taking back seat to "who is having the kids." The just-released Census Bureau Report, "Social and Economic Characteristics of Currently Unmarried Women With a Recent Birth, 2011," (SECCUM) describes for the first time the demographic details of non-marital childbearing -- and it is not a pretty picture.
The report reveals dramatic increases in non-marital births and is the first Census Bureau report showing the relationship of non-marital births to geographic variations and educational attainment. It is depressing yet unsurprising that with median age of women at first marriage approaching 27 years of age, 62 percent of women ages 20-24 who gave birth in 2011 were unmarried.
Among new moms ages 25-29, 32 percent are unmarried, with 17 percent of those in their late 30s not married. The steady increase in non-marital births, as well as the marked increases in recent years, have been noted by social scientists, but largely ignored by the general public.
Likewise, social scientists have noted the significant demographic divides related to fatherless families -- huge education, economic, racial, and geographical divides -- and a mountain of data has accumulated over the past decade documenting these facts; I have reported extensively on these problems in my columns and in my book, Children at Risk: The Precarious State of Children's Well-Being in America (Transaction Publishers, 2010). The prevalence of the problem and the demographic divides are there for anyone to see who ventures out in public or talks to public school teachers, or sadly, to law enforcement officers or social workers.
We can no longer ignore the costly effects to both the children involved and societies at large of the increases in non-marital households simply because the political correctness police make it uncomfortable to address these facts;

Provide welfare only to married coupl...nah, it’ll never happen.
From the census:
* With median age of women at first marriage approaching 27 years of age, 62 percent of women ages 20-24 who gave birth in 2011 were unmarried.
* Among new moms ages 25-29, 32 percent are unmarried, with 17 percent of those in their late 30s not married.
* More than half of unmarried mothers lack a high school diploma (57 percent) as compared with only 9 percent of college graduates who are unmarried mothers.
* Nearly 70 percent of unmarried mothers earn less than $10,000 (which put them well below the poverty level and dependent upon welfare to survive).
* Unmarried mothers are less educated, have lower incomes, are predominantly black and Hispanic, and are located in poorer states or inner cities.
NOTE TO ALL TAX PAYERS OUT THERE:
The public costs of single motherhood — over $112 billion annually — were exposed earlier this year by the Institute for American Values in their report, “The Taxpayer Costs of Divorce and Unwed Childbearing.”
THESE ARE THE OBAMA CONSTITUENTS.
It sounds like an out of control society without “guardrails” to me. We’ve gone back to a primitive Neanderthal type society.

They hit the nail on the head. Political correctness makes it impossible to have intelligent public conversation about the bad life choices of having children out of wedlock.
Remember how Dan Quayle was crucified talking about how the TV show “Murphy Brown” character has a baby with no husband??? Remember the liberal meltdown over that??? We couldn’t discuss the underlying issue, because the liberals decided that Quayle was hateful to single mothers.
That’s how liberals are. They can’t discuss many issues. Anyone who mentions single motherhood as a bad lifestyle choice will be pilloried by the PC police.
Nope, because they’ll have generations of voters.
I do more paternity actions than anything else, no one is getting married
And then a few years later, Candice Bergen basically admitted that Quayle was right.
How have we allowed a minority of people, liberals, to dictate nearly every part of our society from education to the media to families for the last 80 years? They’ve gotten everything they’ve wanted, except for our guns. Hmmmmmm.....
What is the additional cost on society for police work (arrests, investigations, etc...) and incarceration of their spawn?
THe author of the atricle acts like this is news - of maybe just pimp’n his book.
Edward Banfield publihed The Moral Basis of a Backward Society in 1958. Yes, 1958.
THat was followed by the The Unheavenly City (1970) and the The Unheavenly City Revisited (1974) talking about how govt welfare was destroying the inner cities and black families.
People often ask about ‘social change events’ and the LBJ Great Society (AKA Welfare forever to buy votes) in the early 60s was the begging of the end.
What you see today is just the last of the US circling the drain. I hate when is left for my grandchildren.
Illegitimate children used to be excluded from welfare eligibility and were not eligible to demand child support. Then the Supreme Court issued a series of decisions in the 1960's and 1970's which barred treating illegitimate children differently.
The current explosion of unmarried births is a direct and predictable result from that.
Nice turn of phrase.
IIRC, Dan Quayle was eviscerated by the media for stating this fact in his “Murphy Brown” statement.
And in all likelihood the offspring will be dropouts with many headed to our prisons.
We see this thinking on so many issues.
Per the political correctness liberal police:
1. If you oppose affirmative action, you are racist.
2. If you are suspicious of youth in hoodies acting like stereotypical gang members, you are also racist.
3. If you oppose abortion on demand, as espoused in Roe vs. Wade, then you hate women. In fact, you want women impaled on coat hangars.
4. If you oppose same-sex marriage, you hate homosexuals.
5. If you oppose the whole global warming/Al Gore hysteria, then you are insensitive to the damage caused by monster hurricanes, wildfires, and blizzards.
6. If you want to see any changes or cutbacks in government spending, then you hate the poor and any others who benefit from government programs. You don’t want to see children get vaccines. You want to see the handicapped denied public assistance. You don’t believe in any government programs if you question any of our outlays, or seek to balance the budget by cutbacks in spending.
Etc. etc.
RE: How have we allowed a minority of people, liberals, to dictate nearly every part of our society
Obama was re-elected and the democrats retained the Senate in 2012. This INSPITE of Obamacare, Benghazi, etc.
Are you sure liberals are still the minority?
