I have heard that bread in milk was HUGE during the depression as a dessert.

My dad, in his eighties, does that. I bet that's where he got it from.

My dad, who would have been 89 now (he died in 2004), also made this. Probably similar to bread pudding or French toast -- amazing what one can make with so few ingredients.

I think, in these recession times, the challenge for the poor or unemployed & underemployed (especially hipsters) will be how to be creative on a budget.

We used to put cornbread in milk back in the late 40s. Actually it was probably what most people call corn pone as it was flat and cooked on a greased iron skillet.

It tasted pretty good but I bet it would not taste as good now.
