The entire carved surface measures three-acres, larger than a football field and Mount Rushmore.
The carving of the three men towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain.
The deepest point of the carving is at Lee's elbow, which is 12 feet to the mountain's surface.
At the end of the show and festivities, everyone picked up every scrap of nearby litter as they left.
Within an hour, you'd never know a soul had been there...
history and a great art work and these loons want to get rid of it, frigging idiots, is nothing sacred anymore in this country?
Another thread asked if the north should leave and by hell the north east and many big cities should.
I toured the park with my family while the carving was still in progress. I believe it was in 1964. They had the railroad, and the tram running, and an observation facility on top. And if you were daring enough there was part of the scaffolding you could climb down the face on and (almost) view the workmen.
I doubt if OSHA would ever allow that these days.
The relief was impressive even in its unfinished state.
