PepsiCo Inc pulled an online ad for Mountain Dew on Wednesday after criticism from bloggers that the spot embraced racial stereotypes and made light of violence toward women.
The ad was developed by African-American hip-hop artist Tyler the Creator and shows a battered white woman on crutches trying to pick out her assailant from a police lineup featuring five African-American men and a goat.
As she scans the lineup, the goat threatens her: Keep ya mouth shut, snitches get stitches, fool and Ima get outta here Ima do you up.
The woman eventually runs out, yelling that she cant do it - go through with the identification.
The white police officer then takes a sip of Mountain Dew, saying, Shes just gotta do it.
Dr Boyce Watkins, a social commentator and author, called it arguably the most racist commercial in history. Another blog, Daily Kos, called it flagrantly racist and misogynistic.
We apologize for this video and take full responsibility, said a PepsiCo spokeswoman in an emailed statement.
She said PepsiCo removed the ad from its online channels and that Tyler was removing it from his as well. A link could be still be found at press time.
PepsiCo did not pull an earlier commercial that showed the goat, called Felicia, attacking the woman after tasting a Mountain Dew at a restaurant. The woman was the goats server.
So, now goats are a protected race?
Only gay goats.
the goat ran into the hole.....
Offensive, or outrageous?
Surrealistic, or bizarre?
You decide.
LOL!
in very poor taste. (pun intended)
All of the above. I am surprised they had a white person in the commercial at all. Seems as of late a lot of the ads I see are black people
So the Daily Kos and a bunch of other miserable liberals are JUST NOW noticing that hip hop artists are misogynists???? Where is their great cry of "free speech" protections, you know, like they gave Robert "Bullwhip up his butt" Mappelthorpe?
That movie is what we are living right now!!
I prefer the thirst mutilator.
That’s the second reference that I’ve seen today. What movie are you talking about?
Sorry, but other than the goat, I can’t say that the scenario is completely farfetched. It is a lame commercial in surprisingly poor taste. How’d they let this one get by?
Who approved this commercial? I have never heard any of Tyler the Creator’s music, but from what I’ve read it’s amazing the would let him create a commercial.
Idiocracy. It was mentioned here a while back and the next day it was on tv and I was really shocked how much the movie depicts what is happening today and the movie was made as a comedy.
Whoa....who in their right mind thought that was a good idea?
