Guy round the corner joined his part time national guard and for what, love of country, hell no , he joined for the freebies and so do many others.

I joined the National Guard out of high school to pay for college. I'm now a combat veteran who's about to pin on Major in a couple of months.

According to your statement, I should never have joined since I wasn't doing it for the appropriate reasons. Get over yourself.
