KABUL After three tours in Afghanistan, the departing U.S. second-in-command for the country stayed on message but sounded a note of caution at a farewell news conference Tuesday.
Lt. Gen. James Terry referred to the main issues often cited by coalition leaders as markers of success in Afghanistan increased access to education, healthcare and cell phone service for Afghans and the increased capabilities of the Afghan Security Forces. But he stopped short of predicting the demise of what has proved to be a stubborn insurgency.
Im not going to make any predictions, he said. My first time here in 2007 there were a lot of well-intended people making claims about the last gasp of the insurgency. Frankly, (the insurgency) is very resilient.

Taliban, pick up the white courtesy cellphone......Osama calling from Paradise.
does the name dresden, or hiroshima/nagasaki, ring any bells???
i dont recall anyone worrying about any ‘stubborn’ resistance after those brief interludes.....
wtf?
Funny, I hear Obama talking not someone from the Military. One thing this General knows, is how to kiss rearends.
LOL “the main issues often cited by coalition leaders as markers of success in Afghanistan” [are echoed by those in the Democrat administration in regards to the redistribution of wealth in America. Similarities are also apparent in the use of the cell phones as IED triggers.]
“But he also seemed to lament an opportunity lost during his tour in 2007, when he said Afghan forces were not yet ready to cement gains made against insurgents.
We conducted coalition-led operations to clear areas, but we simply did not have the Afghan National Security Forces we needed to hold the terrain, protect the people and deny safe-haven [to insurgents] and, as a result, the insurgency reemerged, he said.”
Roaches
One year after we leave it will be as though we had never been there.
You've got that right. Afghanistan will play out just like Vietnam did.
But there will be one major difference. The NVA did not plot to attack the USA once they took Saigon. The Taliban will follow a different model.
And one more thing. The worthy general mentioned "increased access to education, healthcare and cell phone service for Afghans and the increased capabilities of the Afghan Security Forces".
Poof! All will be gone within a few weeks after we leave.
Nuke the poppy fields.
“Russia, it’s all yours’ now.”
I have figured out how to win the war in Afghanistan. We have been focused on manpower when we should have been focused on brainpower. And where do we get that brainpower? Well, since our admirals and generals have a combined IQ equal to a Sea Cucumber, we get university social science professors! Now, they’re not going to want to come off sabbatical in the Bahamas, so we draft them. We pay them the same as E-3 Soldiers and drop them off in the villages in Afghanistan with a copy of The Atlantic magazine. Think of how the Afghans will rejoice as they hear about queer studies and black studies and what kind of wine you should serve with the crab puffs at the faculty parties. “The professors might get killed!” Well, if they do get killed, they can always take pride in the fact that they didn’t have to use Obamacare.
That was fun! :) Thanks!
