There was a time when I would have agreed with you. That all changed the moment I stood on the north shore of Lake Superior late in October about 20 years ago.
No tides there, which makes everything a lot simpler than something like the coast if Maine, where shipwrecking hazards cover and uncover twice a day, and currents carry you against the wind.
