Slut-shaming is at the root of all problems. Well, it seems to be at the root of a lot of mine, anyway. Anyone whos ever been slut-shamed understands when I say that it can alter your sexual health decisions, erode your self-esteem, and change how you interact with both sexes. And for anyone whos not familiar with the term, slut-shaming is the act of declaring someone a slut (or a whore or any other similar word, or even promiscuous, for that matter) based upon perceived sexual behavior: the clothing someone wears, the way they communicate with potential partners, the people they date, the number of partners they have (or havent) had, and the type of sex they enjoy.
That slut-shaming intersects with and hurts efforts to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) might surprise you. Slut-shaming, the sex-negative way of describing someones sexual activities, combines social repercussions, fear, andas its name suggestsshame in an attempt to control the actions of those who are sexually active. The impact is, generally speaking, an increase in STD transmission rates.
The following spring, I contracted genital herpes.
It took me years to overcome that stigma
When young men and women are made to feel shameful about their sexual behavior, they naturally become reticent to seek advice once theyve become sexually active. That humiliation also means they less equipped to have the conversations people need to have to have safer sex... less likely to talk to partners about using protection, how many partners theyve had, when and for what theyve been tested, and what they want to incorporate into their safer-sex regimen.
I also want to point out that having been slut-shamed was not the sole reason I contracted genital herpes

The author confuses being called a slut with being a slut. It is the latter that spreads STDs.
Maybe the shaming, the taboo, the “social sanction” to use the language of the left, was intended to prevent the spread of disease?
Naah. It was to make people feel bad so they’ll go out and do more of the behavior that caused them to get a disease, according to her.
I guess it’s self-reinforcing eventually, either way. Her “choice.” But she’s going to take a lot of other people down with her, her way.
She may have gotten over the stigma but she still has the Herpes and will have them for the rest of here life.
We need more of this.
“The reason - the only reason - that she got genital herpes was because she had sex with someone who had genital herpes.”
If there was still shame in sluttiness maybe she wouldn’t have gotten it; maybe the transmitter wouldn’t have gotten it to give her. I’ve been married (and monogamous) for almost 2 decades, and I couldn’t imagine dating today. My wife was a licensed hairdesser years ago, and the number of young stylists she worked with who had STDs was disturbing (I see high infection rates among young people in the news as well). One of them felt no responsibility to disclose this to partners because she felt they deserved it as much as she did (SCARY!); she had one of those “permanent” ones.
Well, no. These behaviors define being a slut.
Admittedly it is unfair we don't have an equivalent term for the male equivalent, but that doesn't mean we should discard a useful term for genuinely negative behavior.
What the author is doing here is claiming that nobody should ever have her sexual behavior classed as negative by someone else.
Not if she's not being paid.
However, what she and her friend here did is to my mind pretty much the definition of slutty behavior. I wonder if there is anything she would consider worthy of the term, or if she just thinks nobody should ever comment in a negative way on someone else's sexual behavior, no matter how destructive.
slut-shaming is the act of declaring someone a slut (or a whore or any other similar word, or even promiscuous, for that matter) based upon perceived sexual behavior: the clothing someone wears, the way they communicate with potential partners, the people they date, the number of partners they have (or havent) had, and the type of sex they enjoy.
These would all be acceptable ways of determining a woman’s morals. Society has always used shame to uphold community standards. It’s a good thing.
I agree. She knows she is a slut but too stupid to protect herself against VD. You would think that if she felt shame she would have used condoms to prevent the stigma of an unwanted disease and a creepy partner with so little respect for her that he didn’t care to tell her he was contagious.
Kissing someone can also easily transfer disease. It's mind-blowing that “making out” with random people is considered by many to be disease free. Just like you did with the random Marines.
YOU ARE A SLUT because you are selfishly destroying your chances of being a loved wife and mother. Disease, contraception and abortion will destroy you. All for a few cheap thrills with random men who are using you as a kleenex.
Now stay clean, work on some skills and pray that a respectable man will someday love you.
Signed,
-Former male slut
There’s one cause for “STDs” - fornication.
I’m conflicted as to which part of this incident is hawg-stupider: “youth group spring break bus trip to Myrtle Beach,” or “snuck off to make out with Marines.” I think I’ll have to go with the former, since it was presumably planned by brain-dead adults, while the latter was the act of idiot teens.
(Nothing specific against Marines: the same behavior with any adult men would be equally hazardous.)
You are quite right.
Not to excuse the Marines, as I think adult men going after high-school age girls is inexcusable. Exact age not given, but this certainly could have been a case of “15 will get you 20.”
However, chasing any young women that don’t run away too hard is quite literally hard-wired into the male brain. It’s the default setting, and resisting it is difficult even for guys with every intent of doing what is right. Presence of alcohol doesn’t help with resisting such temptation.
As you say, putting a Christian youth group into a “Girls Gone Wild” type environment doesn’t seem like the best of all possible ideas. /s
To my mind, meeting a random guy on the street and sneaking off to make out with him is more or less the definition of slut.
that she contracted genital herpes is because people called her a "slut."
I disagree. She contracted herpes because she was sleeping around. "People" just ID'd her.
Sorry, re-reading indicates she was probably 16 or 17 when the Marine incident occurred.
I also find it bizarre that she was filled with self-loathing for contracting a disease, not for the behavior that caused her to contract the disease.
Getting a disease is not immoral, it’s just a possible consequence of certain behavior.
It should also be pointed out that to catch a disease it is not necessary to live up to the modern definition of “slut,” which I assume is “excessive sleeping around.” Presumably, a “normal” amount of sleeping around is fine.
To get infected, only a single act is necessary.
IOW, a girl could in theory lose her virginity and at the same time get pregnant and contract half a dozen diseases, some of them incurable, from a single act of fornication.
Same for a guy, of course, except he probably wouldn’t get knocked up. :)
Contracting the disease is just one way of “getting caught.”
I understand your point. Society’s judgment is triggered by the consequences - pregnancy or disease - and seems to send the message not that screwing around is immoral, but that the girl should have managed it better.
