Like an aging rocker, Texas Governor Rick Perry is currently on the 2013 I’m Coming For Your Jobs tour across America. His first stop: California a couple months ago. This week he’s in Illinois, where he got a nasty reception from public officials. The trips are part of an effort to get businesses from highly taxed and heavily regulated states to relocate down South — but his efforts may fall flat, if recent history is any indication.
Texas has arguably become one of the few true economic success stories since the recession. The state has an unemployment rate of around 6% and a $9 billion budget surplus, even as many states struggle with 8% and 9% unemployment and severe budget deficits.
The state is run by pro-business Republicans in the state legislature, along with Gov. Perry, who supports low regulation and low taxes. Texas doesn’t have an individual income tax, either. Its minimum wage is lower than other left-leaning states, which keeps labor costs down. Prices for land and housing are low. And the oil and natural gas boom in recent years has kept jobs from leaving the state. The tradeoff for all this, of course: Texas’s relatively flimsy social safety net.
But Perry still isn’t satisfied with business in Texas. The governor sees even more potential if he can just lure corporations away from states that aren’t as friendly to business. The two states he’s visited so far, California and Illinois, rank 50th and 48th, respectively, in a survey of best states for business, according to a recent poll in the Wall Street Journal.

Apparently he didn’t bother to ask Time to relocate. Some nonsense about “viable businesses only” and “no bailout candidates.”
We haven’t had amy measurable rain in about 3 months now, and the temperatures have been unseasonably warm. It’s looking bad in several places across the southwest.
We’ve been on water restrictions for a long time. Looking out my windows at what was beautiful Lake Travis, I’m seeing mainly islands and sand dunes.
There’s only one natural lake in Texas, which is Caddo Lake in SE Texas.
Houston and the Gulf Coast are getting some flooding n places, but we can’t seem to buy a drop of rain here............

You are a pessimist aren’t you? I have seen no problems in South Texas as yet so don’t understand the problems I’m sure. But, if you are trying to remove doubt from factories moving here, you are trying too hard. Of course there are problems, but water is not really one of them. You are taking today’s situation and trying to forecast the future as some of the leftists do.
Really, don’t try to forecast the future on today’s forecasts. Seems that there are no water problems in Austin that I know of...and that is a Liberal area, so have some faith...heh.

It’s not like the IL politicians and regulators and unions aren’t doing their best to drive business out of the state! Talk about a bunch of collective parasites and looters.
Look, Perry can have all the stoop labor jobs he wants. And most jobs are just that. Most of those jobs are created by greedy employers who hire mostly low wage illegal help...They'll wind up jamming your schools, jails, choking off social services, welfare, hospitals....you name it. Then they'll demand more schools, roads, clinics, more government...more taxes....The employers don't care as long as they get their low wage labor.
People with 3-5 kids can't live off low wages without crushing the system and when that happens, govenrment grows and grows.
When your population doubles and ya got Muslim owned greedymarts and Mexmarts on every corner..You really have to watch what ya ask for.
Ya see when populations increases, the government, and I don't care where ya live, grows along with it, and along with that, government will constantly demanding more taxes, more schools, more money, fees, fines regulations, you name it.
I have yet to see large population regions without ever increasing demanding, taxing and ever controlling governments. The more people then ya attract the unions, bloated school districts, more demand on resources, health services, more demands on everything and trust me, government will be right there...etc., etc.
I just can't understand why anyone would want millions more people jammed into their towns and cities....lol

Which one leads to a healthier, happier, more productive, and more fulfilled society? Extravagant welfare benefits or a gainfully employed populace?
The weird thing is Silicon Valley here is filled with utopian liberals who work very hard and make lots of money. Most of them are raging capitalists, but continue to vote Dem. Go figure.
I got news for ya Deag, jobs like factories and all these smaller manufacturers attract hundreds of tons of illegals and the employers stand in line for their piece of the low wage labor. Of course they pay off the state and local governments to look the other way as they bankroll and support their political campaigns, as a payoff to keep their hands off that dirt cheap labor, most of which are illegal.

They’re a greedy and cash hungry as the next guy. They’ve made hundreds of billions and continue to do so, in that small region alone. These mega companies basically own the politicians and could literally destroy them with train loads of cash if they wanted to.
Celebrities rent jets *owned* by the bigcorp crowd...They are the one’s with the real money.
I do wonder if any of these elected officials ever do any actual work. The prez certainly doesn’t. If I had known all these jobs were so easy, I would have run for office. Governing must be a part-time job. ;-)
Yes, they are slow learners but I’d expect them to learn if they are truly Capitalists... Let’s just hope that they forget their Democratic ways...which will happen when they come to Texas!

Ah yes... I understand your complaints...but let us look at the brighter side... Companies locate to Texas (low wages, you bet) but that is the result of too many unskilled workers applying for low skilled jobs (natural result of bring in many unskilled workers). Unfortunately, Texas in on the border of Mexico and gets many illegals looking for work. Yes, wish for a better system of vetting them but it is what is is.
The result is a productive force of workers (illegals included) that provide benefits to the State and the Nation as a whole. Not ideal but does benefit all.
Now before you get yourself all wrapped up in your knickers...I believe that all companies should do ID verification before hiring any of these folks. Unfortunately, the low cost labor will always be those that ignore the rules. (welcome to Obama and crowd).
I doubt that much will change lately but it will eventually edge toward a law abiding group I hope. If not, we are lost anyway so enjoy the slow changes toward socialism.
All your talk about how Texas doesn’t get what will happen with this population growth makes it sound like population alone created the liberal mess California has. That labor influx alone is the cause of California’s problems.
If that were true, Texas would be the second most liberal state, since it is currently has the second highest population. But it’s not, so there are others factors at work.
I’ve see it repeatedly posted here and elsewhere, over and over that Dallas and other major population centers in TX are becoming more and more leftist and like most other large population centers.
Question:
You deny TX major population centers like Austin, Dallas and Houston are becoming increasingly liberal and more controlling with many becoming more govenrment dependent in these population centers?
Seems that there are no water problems in Austin that I know of...and that is a Liberal area, so have some faith...heh.
Our neighbors 40 miles away in each direction are just fine, soggy even.
