You don’t want a new washing machine! The lid locks before filling with water. Maytag.

Depending on the type, they can often be hacked.

*Locks* that are integrated electronically cannot be hacked.

*Latches* that simply keep the lid closed during agitation or spinning, can be. Some are a simple wiring job, others, which are magnetic, can be unscrewed from the lid and taped permanently w/Gorilla tape to the machine top and the machine thinks the lid is closed.

For the closest thing to an old fashioned washer, search with the terms mechanical rotary controls. I have a new one from GE:
GE 3.9 DOE cu. ft. Stainless Steel Capacity Washer Model # GTWN2800DWW.
See information here:
http://www.reviews.homedepot.com/answers/1999/product/203228624/3-9-cu-ft-doe-stainless-steel-capacity-washer-questions-answers/questions.htm

Hotpoint also makes one

Hotpoint 3.5 cu. ft. DOE Top Load Washer in White
Model # HSWP1000MWW
Internet # 203517068
Store SO SKU # 589681

Google your model/brand washer to see if there is a hack for the lid lock. Include the terms: “disable lid lock”.
