Sens. Schumer and McCain: ‘Congress will vote again on gun control before end of year’
Guns.Com ^ | Apr. 26, 2013 | S.H. Blannelberry

On Thursday, at a breakfast gathering sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and John McCain (R-AZ) agreed that Congress is not done with gun control, that there is a good possibility that legislation calling for tougher gun laws comes up for another vote in 2013.

This announcement, of course, comes a little over a week after the a bipartisan bill that would have expanded background checks to gun purchases made over the Internet and at gun shows failed to garner the 60 votes it need to overcome a Republican-led filibuster.

“I think we’re going to bring this bill back before the end of the year and I think you may find some changes,” said Schumer, who pioneered the universal background check effort for the Democrats.

“Lots of senators who thought it was safe to vote against it” he added, “are not so sure any more” because of changing attitudes.

Schumer is one of many pro-gun control lawmakers who believe that pressure being put on those who voted against the measure by advocacy groups like Americans for Responsible Solutions, the political action committee created by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly, is having an effect.

Gun control, Schumer argued, was also beginning to gain real traction with the masses, “I think we’re at a turning point … I think the numbers are getting a little more intense.”

After make his way around several conservative leaning parts of the Empire State, Schumer claimed to have support for an expanded background check measure from new voices, “I heard from people who said ‘Keep at it,’ and I never heard from those folks before.”

Sounds like Schumer & McCain are keeping their fingers crossed while hoping for another school shooting.

Damn these bastards to hell.

While these morons try to take away our rights through legislation is our side trying to further our rights through legislation?

My point is, Republicans always wait around to be attacked. Why don't they preempt the attack? Make them afraid of a vote. Concealed carry nation wide?

I heard a propaganda commercial on a Boston station this week pushing increased background checks.

But like some political analyst on Fox said this week, In running these ads, Obama and the rest of the gun control crew are essentially just preaching to the choir. The dark blue states that want gun control are already going to vote democrat anyway, so it really makes no sense to "rally the base" for gun control in these states because, at most, all they will do is increase their margin's of victory in already safe democrat districts. However, the congressional districts that the democrats NEED if they want to take back the house, tend to be in rural red states where gun control rhetoric will have the opposite effect and increase Republican turnout.

I don’t think ANY civilian police force should be equipped with battle rifles. They are not going into battle or facing opponents of rifle range. The police claim no “civilian’ needs such a rifle and the police don’t face different criminals than we do, so why should they be armed any different?

My thoughts are that unless American voters get serious about decisively getting rid of congressmen like Schumer and McCain and the legislators who keep hammering on this, then eventually they are going to be successful at ramming this down our throat. With all the problems facing America, THIS is the issue they want to spend their time on. We need to have long memories on this issue, and get rid of them. We need to make sure that doing what Patrick Toomey did is a 100% certain career ender for him. If we re-elect people like that instead of firing them then we are going to have gun control legislation.

I agree. And if there is one thing that history teaches, it’s that an occupying military force will breed resentment and then resistance.

Of course, Obama is probably counting on that. But it might not turn out according to his expectations.

I expect another incident soon.

After Aurora, when the gun control push didn't materialize, I said that the next attack would be a school. Half in jest.

The next attack will be on a church or something. They need a bigger impact event.

And the closer to the next election cycle this vote shall come, the more likely it is to fail.

Gun Control is NOT a popular measure with the majority of American voters, and support for the Second Amendment is enough that it tips the election on this single issue in many districts or even whole states.

This is the “third rail” that many politicians have learned, through painful experience, not to touch. But in this instance, not an entitlement, like so many of the other “third rails”, but a basic Constitutional right.

An armed nation is a free nation. Concealed carry and an end to “gun free zones” assures the potential perpetrator will always remain uncertain of the response of those around him, and even crazy people have some residual sense of self-preservation, at until they have made their statement.

But if they have apprehension about their statement ever being made known, they tend to suppress the more dramatic means of delivery.

When I was watching this all unfold on TV I finally had a concrete answer to the question of just who would attack Americans in their homes: These guys. The ape with the M-4 pointing it at a person in the window. The black ninja’s forcing people out of their homes. That’s who will attack Americans. They are eager to do it. They have weapons, training, and toys. They want to play army. If they blew someone’s head off they would high five and recount the gory details for weeks. These are the rejects from special operations units, the wannabees, and the has-beens. They get off on it. It is exciting and rewarding to them.

When they come to attack us in our homes, we won’t be there; we’ll be at their homes.

No wonder the red state democrat's like Baucus are just giving up and retiring, it's starting to look like the democrats are actually dumb enough to try to run on gun control in 2014, essentially handing every rural red state seat that is up, to the Republican’s...

Since this will get nowhere in the House, Schumer must think that there is a huge groundswell of enthusiasm for gun control that will sweep the Democrats back into power in 2014. Based on the kind of turnout they've seen for gun control rallies versus the kind of turnout that's been seen in the pro 2A rallies as well as intensity as as reflected by Gallup (4% see "Guns/Gun control" as the nation's top problem) -- I think it's wishful thinking.

As for McCain -- I think "dementia" might explain this. What is the point of voting on a bill that's going nowhere (again)?

The next attack will be on a church or something.

A lot of red county church goers would shoot back. That means a blue county or city attack. But they also need a whack job with a gurdge against some specific institution and that's a bit difficult to get with a church. I would lean towards a hospital with a psych ward and look for a specialist who treats some patients and then gets another job somewhere else. Not long afterwards...
