Greece to push claim for German war reparations: foreign minister

Greece is planning to pursue a long-dormant claim for reparations from Germany over World War Two, a further strain on relations with Berlin, which foots most of the bill for its 240-billion euro rescue.

The Finance Ministry has compiled a report that takes stock of all relating available documents spanning more than six decades, Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos told parliament on Wednesday.

It will be submitted to Greece's legal advisers and then Athens will decide how to officially press its claim, he said.

A little late for that.

There has to be some type of statute of limitations.
Otherwise the Jews might as well sue the Italians over being kicked out of Israel 2000 years ago.

If they pay off Greece, I could only imagine how much Poland would get.

How about the Turks for 4 plus centuries of occupation? It was the Turks who used the Parthenon as a ammo dump that got blown up.

You might as well sue the homeless dude under the freeway bridge. You can win but you won’t collect.

That move by Greece is a sign of desperation.

And the Egyptians could sue the Jews for that whole 10 plagues thing ... and the English could sue the Norwegians for the Viking raids ...

Yes it is. And its pretty meaningless too because it solves noting. Greece is in the mess that its in because its government spends much more than it takes in. It wants to provide a lavish Welfare State for its government employees and citizens (in that order) that it simply can't afford now that it can't borrow anymore. Even if they get a debt reduction from Germany based on this nonsense reparations claim, they will be back in a mess in a couple years because they have not addressed their fundamental problem.

Aren’t the descendants of the Norse raiders pretty much the current population of England? At least the Germans went home.

I agree with you. My son got in a financial mess. Wanted me to bail him out. I told him to not until he got his spending under control.

He thought I was a real bad guy until he worked his way out of it. Once he had finally taken serious steps to correct his wasteful ways I did finally help him get his house payments caught up.

And he actually ended up paying me back.

I have a similar family situation. My brother wanted my father to lend him money for a down payment on a house. My father said no because my brother’s income was nowhere near what it needed to be to pay the on-going expenses of a house. My brother resented my father for years for not “helping him out” to get a house but I think he realizes now that he would have gotten himself into a total spending mess if he had bought a house at that time.

What a bunch of crap. The German government of today replaced one that was obliterated by war. It isnt the debt of some German 30 year old today. This is like slavery reparation arguments in the USA. If you buy a house, you aren’t liable for the child support the previous owner owes.

We did the same thing to Iraq. We obliterated the Baath government of Saddam. A new government was installed, and we and every other creditor on earth, -required- the new government to assume all of Saddams financial obligations.

This fraudulent crap does 2 evil things. It encourages warfare by carefully ensuring that the banksters will not lose any investments due to the fighting. And worse, it encourages banksters and NGOs like the world bank to loan to tyrants that might be overthrown, or who may start wars of their own.

If a banker was thinking of loaning money to a dictator, he would need to consider his risk exposure much more carefully, if his borrower was likely to be deposed by a just war. The new government would not be held accountable.

A more interesting case might be if the Greek government sued the banks that funded the Nazi government.

Will the free loaders ever get over hating the Germans? It is mighty convenient to ask for reparations now after they bankrupted themselves through mismanagement of their money. WWII ended 68 years ago.

The Germans have been good citizens of the world since then. They had a very proud history until the past two wars. That is what having two lousy, evil leaders will do to a country’s reputation. All the Einsteins, Beethovens, Bachs and and pharnaceutical companies cannot seem to lift the reputation of this country.

Somewhere I read that the Germans will need two centuries for the world to look at Germans just like any other country.
