Boston bombings suspect... Tsarnaev bled for hours from neck, leg wounds, "might not have lived..."
CBS News ^ | April 20, 2013 | CBS News

More details have emerged about the Friday night capture that brought the intensive manhunt for the Boston bombing suspects to an end. Suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, had been hiding in a boat in Watertown, Mass. Authorities responded to a call from a local man late Friday, after he observed that a tarp covering his boat had been disturbed and there was blood in the boat.

The FBI hostage rescue teams (HRT) planned and executed their operation to clear the boat by lobbing "flash-bangs" into it, which forced the young man to climb out, according to CBS News senior correspondent John Miller. Later the agents observed that Dzhokhar had been shot in the neck and in the leg.

Based on "the amount of blood" the homeowner saw in the boat, it is likely Dzhokhar was shot as long as 20 hours before being discovered, Miller said, referring to the battle earlier Thursday that led to the death of the other bombing suspect, Dzhokhar's 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan.

It was a "fierce gun battle with police after the carjacking and the car chase, at which point they were apparently exchanging gun fire, but also throwing homemade grenades and one large satchel bomb at police officers, so he had been bleeding for a long time," Miller said.

In a photo of authorities apprehending Dzhokhar released Friday, a SWAT team medic can be seen administering an "ambu" resuscitation bag to assist him in his breathing. Another photo shows Dzhokhar climbing out of the boat under his own power, following the commands of the HRT (Hostage Rescue Team), and Miller said it is clear from the images that, "this is a guy who was very weak at this point and probably -- had he not been discovered -- he might not have lived."

A Department of Justice official told CBS News that the arresting agents used an exemption clause to the Miranda law, allowing them to first question Tsarnaev on immediate security concerns before reading him his rights.

"In a case when there are exigent circumstances -- public safety is involved," explains Miller, the exception can be invoked to quickly obtain information; namely "are there other explosives? Is there another plot to blow something up? Are there other people?"

Still, the use of the public safety exception is rare. "We almost never see that," Miller said, adding that i was last invoked to question Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the so-called "underwear bomber" on the Christmas Day 2009 flight into Detroit.

In the coming weeks authorities will continue to question Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who Miller calls "an intelligence windfall." He added that the primary questions for Tsarnaev are those posed by President Obama in his addresses to Boston and to the nation throughout the week: "How did you do this? How did you plan this? And did you have help?"

I think daddy knows a lot more than he’s letting on.

And based on what the terrorist's aunt said it may have to do with their contact and relationship to the FBI. His threat may be to divulge information.

Look carefully at the layout of the final gunfight at the house where the terrorist was in a plastic boat. How could there have an exchange of gunfire there without the surrounding LEOs hitting and killing the terrorist unless they really wanted to take him alive? I doubt that in place, positioned SWAT teams would miss a target with no cover at less that 50 feet away.

Great effort was taken to capture the terrorist alive.

the terrorist was really captured because a civilian went out and searched his own yard.

Per one report, the civilian went outside for a smoke break, noticed the shed door ajar, a portion of the tarp pulled up, and blood smears. He then got a ladder and actually lifted the tarp and saw bloodsmeared Jihadi Junior.

Even if we do, most of the US is in total denial about the real enemy.

Unfortunately, this is true. But, we now have the opportunity to convert a few of those Low Info Types. Time to pour it on. The other side will be doing everything they can to make an innocent "angel" out this guy.

How sophisticated were these foreigners when they set off Walmart pressure cooker bombs in broad daylight, with hundreds of cameras everywhere, and then walk a few blocks away back home?

Just guessing, but this does not seem too sophisticated.

In fact, the feds already were well aware of these AH's.

In fairness, the boat owner should be compensated for damage to his boat and any property damage to his home and grounds.

I agree... that man is a hero. He tipped off the police and/or FBI as soon as he saw the perp lying in his boat bleeding.

Greta Van Sustern had a pretty long interview with the man's stepson last night (last name is Duffy). It took them a good 30-40 minutes to get through to any of the authorities with their very important "tip". He said it was extremely frustrating... they kept getting busy signals, etc.

If the perp wasn't so weak, I have no doubt he would have escaped from the boat long before anyone got to him.

I would think that a good K9 officer could have found him within an hour. Why did it take so long?

Check this.

Why did they note immediately release the videos two days before they killed and wounded others? They could have been ID'd quickly.

In fact, they had great near perfect frontal images of these two foreigners, yet declined to even release them at their news conference, days after the event, where they only released questionable, marginal images of the suspects.

Wrap your head around that.

Curious about all the shooting last night. Sounded like scores of rounds and they didn’t hit him. Did they have a target?

IMHO, I believe persons in very high pay grades didn't want a living body and that's why they turned that boat into a sieve.

When he climbed out of that boat it must have been an "Ooops, brown spots in my shorts" momentfor some people.

The only bad part about that is now the owners of the boat have a big mess to clean up.

I only hope they transfused him with tainted blood so once the information about the rest of the cell is extracted from him, he will languish in prison and suffer with which ever disease he contracted.

Do you think Obama will give an “enough is enough” type speech about Muslims like he did about guns after Sandy hook?

HA!

Comparing this little maggot Khalid Sheikh Mohammed isn’t worth discussion. My fear is this little maggot will live out a comfortable life in some prison and be a role model for other little maggots. Maybe he’ll even get off because he didn’t have a lawyer when he was arrested.

The fools didn’t even have money to get out of town.

They had $800 from the carjack victim’s ATM account. That is enough to get out of the country if they went NW and crossed into Canada somewhere remote. 12+ hours would have gotten them to the UP, where there are areas that are not well monitored.

Possibly, they stayed around because 1) as North Easterners, they only felt comfortable in their own region or 2)they were hampered by checkpoints or 3) they needed the support of the local Chechen community & 4) don’t forget the cops arrested 3 others in connection with all this, so they had a cell.

They were so blatant at the bombing and afterward that it might have been hubris, aka “hide in plain sight”. They also may have wanted to be martyred. That arrogance shows in the Tweets and FB postings. Hard to understand that they weren’t aware of all the camera surveillance, though.

I think they wanted martyrdom. #2 could have cut/dyed his hair in an hour, lost the white cap and changed clothes. He didn’t.

Oh, you’re right. We shouldn’t even try. Instead, we should just shoot him on the spot, then second-guess ourselves later when a previously unidentified compatriot of his shoots up a mall.

Hindsight is 20/20, I guess.

(Although some of us are gifted with a nifty thing called “foresight.” You should look into it. It’s really cool.)

They can charge him with possession of IEDs, which is a Federal crime.
