ROCKUMENTARY: APRIL 20, 1974

Where were you on Saturday, April 20, 1974?

The Army and I had parted company on good terms, and I was living in Seattle’s University District, working at KING full time. Besides engineering Sunday morning’s liberal talk show, I DJ’d and ran religious tapes. When we converted from vinyl to cartridge, I spent nights running the conversion from the production studio. During a period of personnel turbulence, I took over the all-night slot while the old alcoholic who worked all-nights took over all the other shifts. Arbitron only rated one hour of my all-night work, but I was killing my competition at KJR.

Gerry Goffin and wife Carole King had written this song for their babysitter in 1962, and now it was back in a harder version. It came in at #8.

John Denver was riding high, and this gem came in at #7 this week.

Upon the breakup of the Beatles, Ringo had a string of hits in the early Seventies. This came in at #6.

The year 1974 must have been fun for you. What were you doing in those days?

[Publius]

Back when I did the Paul Williams songbook, this tune took a pride of place. Recently, a documentary about Williams, “Paul Williams: Still Alive”, has made the rounds of cable TV, and there is a scene where Williams sings a beautifully affecting version of this song. This comes from the period when Williams and partner Roger Nichols were working with the Carpenters, turning out hits. It debuted at #50 this week on its way to the Top 10.
