I wouldn’t assume the grenades were military issue of any sort. Could be a generic description. Plus, it’s the news, and who knows what remark (by who) managed to make the news. I heard that some observer overheard a cop say something about a bag of grenades.

I think I remember that they were described during the briefing yesterday afternoon as “armed and dangerous”.
If so, how much more did the investigators know?, and when?
Probably brought them through customs and said they were some sort of religious artifact that played into their “heritage”. Thus, since 9/11, we have repeatedly been admonished to not judge all muslims by the actions of a few radicals, they were allowed to bring them in. On the other hand, open carry of an AR in Texas will apparently get you stopped even if you are a decorated service member.

Either TSA screwed up (no surprise there), they were brought over the northern or southern border or by sea, or else they were stolen from the military (with help by an insider). My bet would be brought across the border.
Just speculation, but they may have been ‘flash-bangs’ taken from the cops they killed. Or pipe bombs or both.

The press referred to them as military grenades, but then they wouldn’t know a grenade from a racketball. A lot of descriptions are widely overstated, like the press now saying that the 19 yo is a medical student. He may be a smart guy but at 19 I doubt that he has already completed a 4-year undergrad degree and is now a med student.
They may well have obtained real grenades through underground sources, or they may also have had homemade devices. Maybe they received a “grant” of weapons from Fast and Furious.
