National GOP abandons Mark Sanford
Washington Post ^ | April 17, 2013 | Aaron Blake and Karen Tumulty

Posted on 04/18/2013 9:51:28 AM PDT by JerseyanExile

Following revelations that his ex-wife accused him of trespassing on her property earlier this year, former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford (R) has lost the support of his national party.

The news comes as controversy continues to swirl around Sanford and his personal life — a process that began with his well-publicized 2009 affair but was inflamed, the Washington Post has learned, when one of the Sanfords’ sons met Mark Sanford’s former mistress for the first time the night he won the GOP nomination.

The National Republican Congressional Committee on Wednesday took the unusual step of telegraphing that it will not spend money on his special election campaign. “Mark Sanford has proven he knows what it takes to win elections. At this time, the NRCC will not be engaged in this special election,” the NRCC said in a statement, which was first reported by Politico.

The committee has spent very little on the race so far, but Sanford’s problems have put a conservative district in jeopardy for the Republicans. And the report Tuesday of the trespassing complaint seems to assure that he wouldn’t sail to victory.

A Republican familiar with the NRCC’s decision criticized Sanford’s lackluster response to the report about his ex-wife’s trespassing complaint and said it would be “foolish” for anybody to spend money on him.

“It’s not out of the realm of possibility for him to win – stranger things have happened in special elections,” the Republican said. “But the fact that he wasted precious time and money rehabilitating his image only to squander that makes it very foolish for outside groups to commit resources.”

Governor Haley inadvertently caused all of this: by selecting Scott for the Senate seat, she opened up a House seat that was highly vulnerable. Of course, DeMint caused it too, for if he had remained in the seat to which he was elected, there would be no Sanford House candidacy in 2013.

I hope, people are smart enough not to put Colbert in there

No sorry, they are not smart enough to defeat Colbert. They are so predictable.

the elitist GOP yet again strikes, as usual they will probably let a Dem in and some will cheer that our best hope was to get rid of Sanford and now we’ll get a jokers wife instead and they wonder why they’re called the stupid party

he;s our best bet at getting a seat and instead the stupid party strikes again and some think we should put up a perfect candidate when there is none.

Some times I wonder if our side are really on our side.

I’m stunned that some are happy about this and think letting a jokers liberal wife get the seat is better.

Stupid party strikes again, and for the record there are no perfect candidates

it is truly sad, some it seems if they are on our side think letting a liberal Dem get the seat is better than Sanford.

I;m thinking now that not only the establishment is infested with liberal tools but also now the conservative part is as well

Yea it seems Colberts wife is better than a republican in that seat, what on earth is wrong with our side, do they like losing all the time and think we should find the perfect person all the time for every seat.

So what if he has or been accused of trespassing, I couldn’t give a crap he’s still a hell of a lot better than a liberal in the seat/

Maybe we should keep taking out conservatives, let the establishment decide , I mean they are so better than some of us to pick our candidates ARF

“Are you sure that’s the mistress? That pic looks like SC Gov. Nikki Haley, but I could be wrong...”

You are correct. That pic is Nikki Haley. In fact if you google Nikki Haley you’ll see that’s the same pic Wikipedia uses.

Come on now, this guy is so obviously flawed he should never, ever have been nominated for this House seat. This is a conservatives district in a southern state, usually characterized by values voters. That they, and others like Erick Erickson, bought into his "second chance" BS is just plain pathetic. Sanford is a tool, a liar and a selfish pig.

Still, as you point out, Sanford is better than some Hollywood lefties Democrat sister. Every conservative in that district needs to vote for Sanford in the upcoming special election, and then work on getting this dirt bag to go away so we can run a good candidate in 2014.

Sanford should be permanently barred from public office, though not for having an affair. He should be immediately disqualified from holding public office because he used (i.e. stole) state money to carry on his affair. People get so caught up obsessing over politician's personal lives that they forget that there are actual legal issues involved here, and that Sanford isn't just a sleaze in his private life, he's also a crook.

We can look the other way at an extramarital affair, it's a lot harder to ignore the fact that someone's a thief. So the RNC is right (for once) to write off this guy as a loss.

Wrong. This House seat was NOT highly vulnerable. It's a solid Republican district that the Democrats haven't won since the 70's. It's an overwhelmingly conservative district. Like an R+11 or more district.

The reason we may lose here is because Sanford is a selfish jerk and the primary voters are idiots. This can't be blamed on he "establishment", the media or anyone other than the voters who decided to believe Sanford's "give me a second chance" b*llsh*t. If we lose here we will almost certainly retake the district in 2014 - but in the meantime we will have to put up with Stephen Colbert's liberal sister representing a bright red district.

Republican primary voters really need to wise up. No more horribly flawed candidates. No more nominating idiots like Sanford, O'Donnell, Angle, Akin, etc. It's staggering how many seats we just throw away. The Democrats must be laughing at our special election track record.

Sadly, the pubbies eat their own. If we don’t quit waiting for the ‘perfect’ candidate we’ll totally destroy this country!

Well, this is 2013, and it is vulnerable now. We shall soon see how vulnerable.

The district first went Republican for the House in 1980. But I have a bad feeling about the judgment of voters there.

Well, this is 2013, and it is vulnerable now.

It's ONLY vulnerable because of Mark Sanford. We could have nominated Bostic or any of the other Republicans and won. We could have nominated a yam or a head of lettuce and won. It's only because that tool Mark Sanford managed to fool "values voter" conservatives into giving him a second chance that we are in this mess.

It's not about waiting for a "perfect" candidate. It's about not supporting a candidate who embezzled state funds for personal travel expenses. Are you willing to support any crook as long as there's an "R" next to his name?
