Emergency crews were responding Wednesday night after a report of a major explosion at a burning fertilizer plant in West north of Waco.
West firefighters were dispatched to the plant earlier in the evening after an earlier fire rekindled.
The explosion was reported at around 7:50 p.m. in a frantic radio call from the scene of the fire at West Fertilizer at 1471 Jerry Mashek Dr. just off Interstate 35.
Numerous injuries were reported and multiple ambulances were requested.
Several buildings were reported destroyed and a nearby nursing home was damaged.

It is unbelievable.
Tommy Muska Mayor is impressive...firefighter himself...was a block away and heading toward the fire when it blew. His house is in shambles, doors and windows blown...blew his hat off...then he heard it...blew the rearview mirror off his windshield. Lived in West all his life and been mayor for two years. He is one cool guy. Professional to the max.
Ammonia in the air drifting.
That video looked like it was filmed from miles away.
Hard to believe he survived.
***** “Tommy Muska Mayor is impressive...firefighter himself...”*****
He knows that those Firefighters that were there fighting the fire, his friends and fellow Firefighters ...
I also appreciated the media not asking him how he “felt”
Weird stuff happening all over. Last week a fire in the Kansas nuclear reactor. Before that two other power plant problems. Shot up infrastructure in Northern Cal. That Korean looking dude that all of a sudden went nuts and attacked a military person in Walmart.
Perhaps someone needs to alert our corrupt keystone cops, although from what I have read security has been ramped up across the board. Just thank god that we still have our guns in these perilous times for our nation.
I can't tell you how much I agree with you on that.
Apologize for being a little insensitive in that comment. Did not know just how many casualties we have. Wow.
Understand. These are his guys. He was very much in the minute...knows tomorrow will bring what it does... Five generations of firefighters in my family. A unique breed. Bless 'em.
Amazing. That was the wind all of Texas has been dealing with today. See how far left that huge flame was moved.
OMG! Beyond words.
It is so hard for me to explain but the tears won’t stop, I’m Military not a Firefighter, those that run to and not away from will always be my brothers.
Certainly beyond words. I Just checked MSN and they say 70 “injuries” and a nursing home was damaged. other stuff but there are priorities in news.
I understand completely. Military and FF are of the same mold imho. Special breed.
Thank you for your service while I have you here.
Yup, and it could get windier by morning.
70 injuries...I am not surprised. The nursing home had 133 occupants according to the Mayor. Search and rescue ongoing.
Channel 5 DFW News now reporting 200 injured. 75-100 homes/businesses destroyed or damaged.
Always get the sweet rolls and kolaches, cleanest bathrooms as we’ll. My heart aches for these folks!
I have been though there dozens of times, but never stopped to check out West.

You have missed a treat. It’s an old Czech-settled community with great little coffee shops and bakeries famed for their kolaches. ....Wife and I often stopped there for a break on trips South of the DFW area. Folks in my office would sometimes drive there on weekends and bring back kolaches for everyone on Monday.
Was watching local DFW TV news earlier and finally swithched to FNC to see if they were covering the story. They are.
