A large explosion rocked the town of West, Texas, 19 miles north of Waco, on Wednesday evening.
A source tells News 8 that a large swath of the small town with a population of 2,800 has been leveled.
According to initial reports, the blast was at the West Fertilizer plant at 1471 Jerry Mashek Drive, about a half-mile east of Interstate 35.

Did you hear what he said about his own house? He said he went by there and, "It's a mess."
My heart is aching for these people.
National Guard asked if they were needed. Head man on the scene resonded “Not at this time.” I thought the NG couldn’t get involved without the governor’s orders. Maybe Perry called the local CO and told him to go if they needed them.
He said he couldn’t get to his house. They wouldn’t let him in. He says he has two other cars there and people need cars but he can’t get to them. He said it blew his cap off and blew the rearview mirror off his windshield.
Channel 13 in Houston kept showing the Jimmy Kimmel Show. They will be getting an email from me. I’ll never watch their local news again. 11 and 2 both had live coverage and reporters on the scene.
Man.... I can scarcely imagine being on the receiving end of something so powerful.
And the Texas City refinery explosion was April 16.

It’s been reported that people are wondering around disoriented. And those who are walking because their cars were destroyed.
Sheriff McNamara just stated that some residents were going to have to be “coaxed” out of their homes “for their own safety”.
WTHey??? 11:30 in the evening and rousting people out of their homes for their own safety..... gonna be a very long night.

Watching MSNBC’s coverage. Not that I like it, just want to give everyone a different take than CNN or FNC.
NBC reports emergency vehicles coming in from all over West Texas.
Said explosion could be felt 45 miles away.
The town probably grew up around the plant. Casualties outside the plant itself would have been avoided if they had prescribed to industry accepted set-backs for the quantity of hazardous materials they were dealing with.
There are certain industries where the potential for tragic events and accidents are quite possible and a fertilizer plant is one of them. I am a small government guy who believes in capitalism, but common sense tells you that allowing a school, nursing home, and residences next to such a plant is a bad risk. The recommended stand-off distance for a truck of fertilizer on fire is further away than that nursing home was on the video.
Prayers for those affected in this tragedy and hopefully other communities will learn from this and take steps to prevent a disaster like this in the future. I understand the politics - it’s jobs and tax dollars in a small town with limited revenue, but hindsight will show how much cheaper it would have been to relocate this plant.
Fertilizer and components of fertilizer in these quantities are extremely dangerous and they should not be anywhere near population centers. Just devastating watching this on television and it makes me sick to my stomach. Unbelievable.
Those folks are most likely in deep shock. I agree. They'll have to be coaxed out.
Another guy was interviewed and said the same thing. He said he felt it then heard it and things started falling off his truck. Said his ears were ringing and he couldn’t hear.
The videos tomorrow are going to be devastating.
I worked in a fertilizer plant years ago that made ammonium nitrate.. Ammonia all over the place. We walked around the plant smoking. We were stupid! What the hell, I’m not sure how to spell ammonia

West, Texas is not in west Texas. It’s in central Texas. I know, it used to confuse me when people talked about West, Texas. The major has said they got all the help they need at this time.
