Few South Africans have the moral stature of retired archbishop Desmond Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who campaigned against apartheid and now laments the crime and inequality that plague the nation two decades after it cast off racist white rule.
"We can't pretend we have remained at the same heights and that's why I say please, for goodness' sake, recover the spirit that made us great," Tutu said. "Very simply, we are aware we've become one of the most violent societies. It's not what we were, even under apartheid."

I remember this clown on 60 Minutes decades ago and Don Hewitt’s typically racial pandering piece in which Tutu is presented as 100% good guy and his repetitious “Come over, come over” (to our side).
Now 20+ years later the damage is done. If he truly felt this way, then he’s speaking out waaaayyyyy too late. SA has been a hellhole for ages yet its politics were treated as a one way street, with whites being the heavies and blacks always the victims. Doesn’t work here, doesn’t work there.
“Show me one nation ruled by blacks that is well-run and prosperous”
In any modern vintage, it has never happened...never will. It might be that in the time of the Queen of Sheba (whom I think was Queen of what we now know as Ethopia) black rule was well run and prosperous.
Yeah, this article flew off the tracks in the first half sentence.
They’re far from being pure as the driven snow, but neither are they the complete and total ogres they’ve been depicted to be. They outlawed slavery several decades before the US did and it didn’t take a bloody civil war to do it, but they maintained a power structure that sounded uncomfortably similar to Jim Crow, to US ears.
I can’t honestly say that black South Africans are any better off now, they just have a different set of problems and a country that is destabilizing. At least it’s their people who are doing it, though, for whatever consolation that might provide.
Read that as "just like they did in Zimbabwe." These buggers have a perpetual scapegoat now, so I'm not holding out much hope of any change for the better. They didn't want freedom; they wanted stuff.
They're unique, that's no doubt. It's like the black version of "Downton Abbey' there.
I hope Bermuda lasts 1000 years as-is. At least.
Tutu has obviously never studied the history of Africa. Things were far, far worse before apartheid. And they’re going to be that way again soon.
Just a Leftist clothed in religious garb.
I don’t even need to spend time criticizing black culture. But we live in a world where white culture is considered inferior, even evil. Meanwhile, we have a black culture rife with crime, poverty, drugs, child abandonment and abuse, lousy education. Trillions are being taken to supposedly remedy some wrong I know I didn’t commit.
Yet we are being told whites are inherently bad.
As for Tutu, he caused all this because he is an idiot communist.
But note he is still worshiped even though he screwed everything up.
I’m glad for Bermuda’s prosperity, but in recent years I definitely recall hearing that crime has been rising there.
Very good post!
And correct.... but liberals will NEVER admit to this truth.
A Republic of good people following a set of moral principles is the only way a society can thrive.
Tell that to Stephen Biko, oh wait, you can't.
The interior of South Africa, until the late 1800s, was ruled by a series of black chiefs including Shaka, Mozilikaze, Mantatasi, Dingaan etc who were all blood crazed killers who wiped out entire tribes in their quest for the cattle and women belonging to their neighbours.
In those happy times the value of a woman was measured in terms of a few cows, as it still is.
The colonialism and apartheid that followed was infinitely better than Shaka’s butchery and was a tiny blink in the history of stagnant black Africa.
the ANC could have made further improvements but they were only concerned with power and loot.
The money stolen and wasted on the presidential Nkandla compound alone could have built houses for some 12 000 families.
The Afrikaners colonized the Cape Colony before encountering the Bantu tribes during the Great Trek in the 19th Century.
So why dear Tutti
Has South Africa so declined?
Be precise.
