Few South Africans have the moral stature of retired archbishop Desmond Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who campaigned against apartheid and now laments the crime and inequality that plague the nation two decades after it cast off racist white rule.
"We can't pretend we have remained at the same heights and that's why I say please, for goodness' sake, recover the spirit that made us great," Tutu said. "Very simply, we are aware we've become one of the most violent societies. It's not what we were, even under apartheid."

He took away their jobs and gave them a free cell phone and a food stamp card. To me, that just seems wrong.
Without the white guys and their apartheid you black South Africans would have no gold mines. You would be as poor and discombobulated as most African nations. Even with your gold mines you are doing a fine job of turning the clock back 200 years
The preferred voter block could break an anvil.
Not just the blacks - to America as a whole!
South Africa has a huge problem in that it has elected the same black liberation party (ANC) ever since apartheid ended. The party that ended apartheid has routinely commanded such a large share of the black vote that they get 60%+ in general elections and can do whatever they want.
This has translated into corruption, nepotism, sex scandals, nutty officials, racial violence and a dramatic decline in economic growth. Yet the same party gets elected over and over, and they know no matter how bad they screw up because the vast majority of blacks will always vote for them.
Sounds familiar...
It's the South African version of George Bush's fault.
.. all this remind you of anyone we know? :)
Naw, it’s more like the South African version of “de turrible turrible lebacy ob de slabery”
Bermuda, one of the highest GDPs in the world, not only has had black premiers in the past (a white one now) but has had a black woman premier in the past. It is exceptionally well run and has been for 40 years.
And it is relatively violence free. Dr. Walter Williams frequently contrasts Bermuda with Jamaica.
I would also say Ivory Coast has been a model country for its first 20 years of independence and flourished. It fell into some difficult economic times after 1980, but has recovered some. Relative low level of violence there.
Why you racist, reactionary, bitter clinger, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Bermuda is a British colony.
It is run by the government there, though. I don’t think the British colonial office has anything to do with it any more.
Yeah, just double checked. It is run by the governor, has its own constitution, and is pretty much independent.
Bermuda....a Commonwealth country with British rule of law. That’s their saving grace.
Desmond Tutu is a LIBERAL NUTCASE who promptly moved to the US from South Africa after he played a key role in turning that nation into a Hell hole.
