You may remember my weekend of Norman Whitfield songs and production at Motown. Whitfield and Barrett Strong had written this song two years earlier, but held it back while Whitfield took the Temptations into psychedelic soul. The group’s longtime fans were livid, even though the new sound sold well. They held this song back and released it to appease the Temptations’ fans. It came in at #1 this week.
