House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) signaled Thursday that he may continue to bypass a House Republican rule [i.e. the "Hastert Rule"] that has required any legislation being voted upon to have the support of a majority of the GOP conference…
He said at a news conference Thursday that he will continue to try and follow it in spirit, but also suggested he might well violate it for upcoming votes on guns, immigration and the budget.
“Listen: It was never a rule to begin with,” Boehner said. “And certainly my prerogative – my intention is to always pass bills with strong Republican support.”
He’s violated the Hastert Rule several times on budgetary matters, most notably the fiscal-cliff deal (and as recently as two days ago), but caving on cultural hot-buttons like background checks and amnesty has the makings of a Category Five shinolastorm among the base. Some House conservatives are already warning him not to cross the line:
The effort is being led by Reps. Paul Broun, a Senate hopeful gunning for Georgia’s open seat, and Steve Stockman, a Texas Republican who gained notoriety earlier this year for inviting rocker/2nd Amendment-defender Ted Nugent to the State of the Union.
“We are writing to express our strong opposition to legislation requiring private sale background checks for firearms purchases,” the letter reads. “Under the precedents and traditions of the House, we would ask that no gun legislation be brought to the floor of the House unless it has the support of a majority of our caucus.”…
A spokesman for Rep. Stockman says more than 45 Republicans have signed the letter, although it’s doubtful a “Hastert majority” of the House GOP will endorse it.
Other House members are warning him to follow regular order on immigration and not try to rush the bill through. Could a bill even get through GOP-dominated House committees, though? The only way to get something passed might be to violate both the Hastert Rule and regular order: Bypass the committees, rush something to the floor, and then hope that a unanimous Democratic caucus and critical mass of 30 or so GOP squishes rams it through. The question is, what if that happens? Will the caucus, under the microscope of a shady amnesty vote, be forced to oust him as Speaker? Or is Jonathan Bernstein right that tea-party congressmen kind of like the idea of seeing popular legislation pass, which arguably helps the party in the aggregate, while being able to vote no on it, which helps them in their home districts? It’s certainly true that, for all of Boehner’s anti-Hastert-Rule heresies, there’s been no serious effort to depose him. But maybe on immigration and, especially, on guns, the caucus would have no choice. If a bad bill passes and they don’t dump him, conservatives back home might hold it against them regardless of whether they voted no on the bill itself.
If either Gun Control or Illegal Alien Amnesty passes the House.... not only I am done with the GOP....I will work to eliminate the party.
If you are really a conservative... its put up or shut up time
You see, the Hastert rule was put in place so that the moderates ruled the day, since the majority of the republican caucus in the Hastert years were still the old guard. Well about 30 of them either retired or were defeated in 2006 and then about another 30 retired or were defeated in 2008.
In 2010, about 60 members new members were elected, most of them conservative so a majority of the republican caucus in the House is now conservative. Ergo, out goes the Hastert rule.
It was an excuse that could be used to quiet conservatives “sorry, little Jimmy conservative, but your proposal doesn’t have the support of a majority of the caucus so...we just won’t be doing that.” but now it’s “sorry little Jimmy conservative but your ideas are crazy and we didn’t want to tell you so...so we’re going to do what we know to be right, which is moderate-liberal legislation, and we’re going to pass it with the help of the democrats”

This afternoon I received a call from the Republican National Committee. The young lady started to tell me about the things that Obama was going to do. Just so happens I had just read the story about the 16 defectors involved in the gun bill so as she spoke I started saying their names, Alexander-Ayotte-Burr, she continued talking and telling me about how the Republicans were the only ones who could stop the madness, Chambliss-Coburn-Collins, she stopped talking and asked me what I was doing. I gave her an earful about the traitors that are so called Republicans and if they are the ones I would be supporting I did not want anything to do with this party. She was pretty bold and asked if I could just spare $35.00. I said yes and that I would write one a month to each of their primary opponents in the next year. She finally gave up.
They quit calling me.

Past time for that. Tethered are already other parties to go to but nobody does. Instead they just sit hear complaining and whining spinning little theories like their Boehner peso bear one. Truth is it is too late. The cultur3 is lost and when it is lost than it is impossible to take a nation back from the edge. The only question is how this will end. Will good people surrender, fight or run away. Those are the only viable options now. I say fighting is useless. Surrendering unacceptable. So leaving the country and finding a new place to start a free nation is the only realistic option in the long term. Just as our forefathers fled England so we must flee America for a “new world”. Is it somewhere in the western pacific or perhaps southern part of Africa? New Zealand’s farthest outreaches or the northern mountains of Thailand? It’s time to start thinking of which exit to use.

As for me, I think the country of my birth is worth fighting for. So I’ll continue to do that even if I find myself in the midst of defeatists.

Apparently, most of the “Republican” “lawmakers” would rather have a Democrat House than to dump Boehner; they don’t want to offend the critical state of OH, I guess.

Agreed. He acts like such a loser. He sounds smart just wimps out all the time and let’s the country get screwed. But he’s in the spot where he could do a lot of good if hed only go shopping as you suggest. Hero Boehner!

If the evil statists of both parties succeed in destroying our Republic, then I pray every single one of them are hunted down, put in chains and put on trial for high treason against our beloved Constitution.
