The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said in addition to the 2,500-mile-range Musudans the North Koreans could conduct test firings of several 620-mile-range Nodong missiles and shorter-range Scuds simultaneously as a way to thwart U.S. missile defenses.
Unlike earlier launches, the North Koreans are not expected to provide advance warning of the timing for the launches, such as announcing a sea and air closure zone, because of heightened U.S. and Japanese missile defenses.
The Pentagon has at least four missile-interceptor ships in the region equipped with SM-3 interceptors. Additionally, long-range interceptors based in Alaska and California are ready to counter any missiles fired toward the United States.

“The United States and Japan are preparing to shoot down the missiles if they fly over Japanese territory or are aimed at U.S. bases in the region,” said one official.
The missile tests would be banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions passed after earlier long-range missile tests by North Korea.

Ahh, crafty Norks! They anticipated that move.
The Norks, anticipating our every move, are no doubt engaged in positioning decoy hardware for us to follow.
Actually, they test their missile, we test shooting it down and we test our own missile and see if they can shoot it down.

That’s a great question considering N. Korea is still at war with the UN. Some would argue that since we are technically still at war, the president already has the authority. On the other hand, Congress never formally declared war on N. Korea, so others would argue that the war was illegal in the first place.
I don’t think a lack of authorization is the issue, but rather, a lack of governmental will.

I once read somewhere that 4 or so of those 50MT firecrackers ,if they were detonated in a short span of time, placed correctly, could split the planet apart. Of course we have all read all sorts of things about nukes over the years, I just remember that as I thought it was interesting. No doubt, a 50MT is a big bang. Isn’t that what the Tsar was rated? Or was it more? Didn’t they actually reduce it some, because they were afraid the bomber couldn’t get away?

Hardly, Tsar Bomba create a five mile diameter fireball in open air. Below-ground crater size, for a buried detonation, might be a little bigger. Zone of total destruction above ground (burning; pressure damage) was about a 50 mile radius. Earth is just under 8,000 miles diameter. Not much chance a rock that size is going to crumble based on those little firecrackers.

Hey, maybe since NK have one of the largest stockpiles of chemical/bio weapons in the world, maybe they'll be able to set one off in the U.S. and most of the population will be affected or infected!
