He saw how Black leaders were making money crying racism and knew he could do the same as he had a background in mass marketing. He set up SPLC and makes money by sending out mass mailings of alerts about what he says are racist or right wing dangers. Most on the list are not a threat or way old and gone. Of course every alert is a fundraising plea, most of the money raised goes to Dees and his few top employees.

You described perfectly how it’s being done on OUR SIDE as well. Just substitute ATR or ACU for SPLC and Grover Norquist for Morris Dees, and it is the SAME ANIMAL! Norquist & the gang of 8 call us ‘Bitter enders’ and racists and then turn around and ask for $$$ so they can destroy conservatism. IMO, it’s money laundering and an effort , which is working too well, to destroy conservatism and the tea party.

A background in direct marketing. Big difference there. He has a database known derogatorily in the industry as a "suckers list," of people who are easily rattled into coughing up money whenever they don a Klan hood and yell "BOO!"
