The SPLC is a leftist cover group trying to be a money magnet.

SPLC had a run in with a KKK operation and sued them and won. They have all the money they could ever need ~ which has made some of us wonder if they aren't doing the fund raising thing just to make others believe they don't have the big bucks!

They have, in the past, hired on people who earlier worked for Jack Abramoff ~ which tells me they don't vet folks all that well.
