Microsoft's Windows 8 software appears to be driving buyers away from PCs and toward smartphones and tablets, research firm IDC said Wednesday. That's leading to the fastest drop in PC sales the firm has ever seen.
Global shipments of PCs fell 14 percent in the first three months this year, IDC said. That's the sharpest plunge since the firm started tracking the industry in 1994.

But once the public starts reading about the Windows 8 disaster in the MSM, Window 8 is deader than a Dodo bird. Many already know to avoid it, from having talked with folks in the know. Social media has already virtually killed Windows 8 sales as folks share their horrific experience with it, or show youtube videos of people's reactions when they try to use Windows 8 for the first time.
But publication in the MSM is the official death knell, as even the clueless are now exposed to how truly awful Windows 8 is.
The 4,735th last nail in Microsoft’s coffin.....
Apparently Windows XP is still used on more computers than the newer O/S’s. I remember loving my old XP machine and I still miss playing some of those games I had.
Twice in the last 3 months I’ve visited a local “mall” (typically a rare occasion for me).
Both times the Apple store looked like they were giving away free beer, and the MS “Surface” kiosk was the loneliest place in town.
“The 4,735th last nail in Microsofts coffin.....”
Windows 8 won’t be the last nail, but the board better remove the pneumatic coffin-nailing gun from Ballmer’s hand real soon and hire someone else to run the show, or Microsoft is indeed headed for real trouble.
Try this.
Once you get around the horrible start menu. It’s not so bad.
Unfortunately, most people don’t want to get around it (and I don’t blame them.)
My office computer is still on XP. I doubt I will get to Win 7 any time soon. The way our IT upgrades work, Windows 9 will be on the downside before they upgrade me.
How does it affect you techies with some using smart phones now?
Win 8 is great, only the interface is a flop. Download free classic shell and turn Win 8 to a better, faster win 7.
And the laptop and I thank you for sparing us from The Horror...
People don't like Windows 8 because of the Tile/Metro inteface. That's the most superficial and cosmetic part of it, and the easiest to fix.
The economy is in the tank, everybody's disposable income is down, and the author is going to hang all the blame for the drop in PC sales on Windows 8. I think I'd like a second opinion.
I asked one of the IT guys at work if we’d upgrade from XP anytime soon. He laughed really hard then said, “Wait...you weren’t serious were you?”
Windows came of age in the 80s, flourished in the 90s and the 00’s. Like every technology it’s had it’s hey day and is now in a not so slow decline for those that have eyes to see.
Is it going away completely? Of course not. Are its better days behind it? Smart money says yes.
I just had a new gaming pc built, but I would not have done this were I forced to have Windows 8 as the OS.
I can see no use or point for this product.
I’m not going to touch my desktop monitor with my fingers ever. That is just silly. I realize that there is some software that will make it look like the standard desktop, but I’ve no interest in this, I’ll take 7.
Secondly their television add campaign is frickin’ retarded.
I am not interested in dancing people clicking screens together, I am not interested in magicians on an airplane, I am not interested in showing animal pictures to young children.
If they cannot show me what the product does or why I need it, then I’m not buying it.
I just converted from XP to Win7 last year (home use).
As for Win8, I just do not see how it could be a ‘productivity’ software. Touch screening does not lend itself to many work environments.
It may be okay for checking email, but not much else. But then, I think cellular phone texting is a giant step backward.
I like it. My whole family likes it.
