JUBA (Reuters) - Five U.N. peacekeepers and seven civilians working for the U.N. mission in South Sudan were killed in an ambush by unidentified attackers in the restive eastern state of Jonglei on Tuesday, the United Nations said.

"At least nine additional peacekeepers and civilians were injured in the attack and some remain unaccounted for," the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said in a statement.

India's foreign ministry said the peacekeepers killed were Indian. The nationalities of all the civilians killed were not immediately available, though the United Nations said two of them were South Sudanese and the other five were contractors.

U.N. spokesman Eduardo del Buey said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was appalled by the attack and urged South Sudan "to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice. He recalls that the killing of peacekeepers is a war crime that falls under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court."

The U.N. Security Council and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice also condemned the attack.

The soldiers were escorting a U.N. convoy near the town of Gumuruk in Jonglei, a remote state hit hard by a cycle of cattle rustling, tribal violence and fighting between government forces and insurgents.

So after seeing this last night I got curious about U.N. "peacekeeping" operations. Just how many blue helmets are there? Where do they come from? How much do they cost? The answers were interesting.

It wasn't some corrupt bureaucrats who were killed; it as five Indian soldiers who were assigned to the UN and just doing the job they were ordered to do. Would you feel the same if it was five of our soldiers assigned to the UN who died?

Not too effective at “peacekeeping” when they are killed. Didn’t they have functioning weapons or do UN rules preclude that?

Is it the same reason why Coalition troops succumb to Jehadis in Afghanistan and Iraq? What’s the total death count fighting these barbarians so far, or has everyone lost count?

I do wonder how peacekeepers enforce the peace? Is the blue helmet like the deterrent of the ADT lawn sign or up the chain command? Either way they are a useless body.

“islam is as islam does”.

This is South Sudan. They split off from the Muslim north a couple of years ago. The leader of the insurgent forces who staged the attack is a Christian who just doesn't agree with the South Sudan government.

I did not see the “South” part. Sorry... I know all about South Sudan. I misunderstood. He doesn’t sound much like a Christian to me.

Did you feel the same for Saddam’s troops fighting against our troops in the war on Iraq, no, I didn’t think so,so you question doesn’t apply.

The UN is an enemy of a free people.
