Sen Mark Begich declared a sea change in the politics of gun control immediately after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., telling his local newspaper that he would not hesitate to buck the powerful National Rifle Association.
Over the past two weeks, while Congress has been in recess, Begich said he was approached repeatedly by constituents who echoed NRA views, telling him not to, in his words, mess with our gun rights or ban anything.
The NRAs recent successes on Capitol Hill as well as a string of victories in state legislatures across the country demonstrate the effectiveness of the groups strategy to overcome a post-Newtown tilt toward gun control. The organization has drafted and circulated legislation, mobilized its members and continued to put pressure on politically vulnerable lawmakers.
The NRA is one of the most important groups in my state, said Begich, one of several Democrats from conservative states who are up for reelection next year.
But even gun-control advocates acknowledge that the NRA is getting the better of them, both in Congress and state capitals across the country.
The NRAs congressional operation is so effective that one of the gun lobbys most outspoken critics, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), initially signed on as a sponsor of the NRA-supported background check bill. Blumenthal said he had no direct contact with the NRA when he signed on to the measure but had been drawn by the idea of a bipartisan initiative to improve background checks.
On Friday, Blumenthal withdrew his support, saying in an interview that he was no longer comfortable with the bill because of serious unintended consequences related to provisions governing the mentally ill.

I don't believe liberals care about protecting children. It doesn't square with who they are... they're pushing an agenda... disaster's just part of their power play.
It reminds me off all those 'charities' - groups that quickly put out TV ads about national and international disasters to raise money - but somehow that money NEVER gets to the victims. It's the same liberal elite types that run both scams.
And the press never has time to look into those scams...
The Washington Compost doesn’t get it. People are not following the NRA’s lead, people are pushing the NRA to do the right thing. People don’t belong to the NRA because they are brain washed. It is similar to Rush and his listeners.
Gee - Did they ever consider that the NRA has success lobbying, because of the huge numbers of registered voters that agree with the NRA on the importance of civil rights, including the right to bear arms?
Translation: NRA is a bad influence......
Reality: NRA echoing the views of its constituents......
That's how I read it too.

Abortion....it's for the children.

...and then you shoot them to make certain the JBTs will never do it again. When enough JBTs don't return, they'll be less willing to bother folks. They might just turn on their masters that have sent them to certain deaths.
Hey washington compost......the NRA is us. Me!
