Looking at the Ruger SR1911 - while it's (still) legal here in CT.
Would also welcome knowledgable/experienced FReeper input on relocation options for those able to leave Connecticut.
Preferably somewhere warmer, but not sweltering, family/tax/gun friendly, with some elbow room to enjoy life. Overseas is not off the table.
Everything is cheaper except sales tax, and there's no income tax. Business is exploding, the housing market is half the price of CT for the same or better amenities, and people are generally very conservative as well as tolerant.
Our governor seems a little kooky sometimes, but he minds Texas business and he's the opposite of Malloy. The roads are designed by people with brains and finished in a year instead of 10 years, and the amount of open space is mind-boggling.
It snowed last Christmas. Texas has reciprocal pistol permit laws.
Do it! Send me a FReepmail if you want more detailed info.
Good News! We have invented Air Conditioning and learned to ice down the beer before serving.
Come on down. Bring a snow shovel with you. You can mount it on the side of the garage and your neighbors will ask what that is.
If you really want to get them laughing, bring out the 8 hp track-drive snow blower and tell them what you paid for it.
My “ideas” and “ways” are foreign to CT and the N/E to begin with, which is why I need to get out.
Have applied for a teaching job in Grove. Retire from MO and live on Grad Lake...sounds good!
the Ozarks are great...just don’t tell anyone.
A friend is investigating Belize next week...
Some places are just so hot that you can't enjoy being outside, and I'd rather not spend nice (but sweltering) days inside with the A/C on. Been there, done that elsewhere...
May I suggest a visit to meet some FReepers from different parts of the state all in one place?
8th Annual TexasCowboy Memorial Shoot ~ Planning Thread

The date for the 8th Annual TCMS shoot will be June 8th, 2013 and will be held at Dietz Gun Shop and Shooting Range, in New Braunfels, TX.
We also have swimmin’ pools.
Some folks don’t notice the sweat when underwater.
I understand. I’ve bounced around a few different places but there is lot to Texas to make it “home”.
Grove is nice from what I recall. I live in Tulsa.

I’ve heard that NE Texas is nice
BTTT
I live in Central Texas near Hill Country. I love the freedom I feel here, but the heat is real bad 4 months out of the year.
If I were not here, I would probably want to move to Northern Arizona or Idaho.
I have been to Arizona and love it there. I have never been to Idaho, but I have heard a lot of great things about it.
How do you like your SR1911? It looks like a very nice pistol.
I don’t live there anymore, but Reno NV has low taxes, the summers are warm, but not sweltering. The winters are somewhat chilly in the morning, but the low humidity seems to have a good effect on old joints. Real Estate is dirt cheap now. I also like Eastern Washington around Spokane. It is several degrees cooler than Reno, no state income tax, property taxes about average.
I know what you are saying about crime rates, but you should try to research based on locality and not the whole state. For example, NV ranks seventh highest in violent crime for the 59 states. If you take out Clark County the rest of the state would rank down near the bottom. Fortunately, there are three hundred miles of desert between Vegas and the rest of the state.
The late author and newspaper columnist Lewis Grizzard (native of Georgia) had a great comment addressing your point, and I paraphrase:
“We don’t mind you Yankees moving down here....There’s just one thing we ask...don’t tell us how you used to do things back in Cleveland. We don’t care. If you like it so much up there, I’ve got news for you. Delta is ready when you are!”
Accordingly, all disaffected Easterners are encouraged to visit on your way through to live somewhere else.
No guaranteed right to own a gun in Belize.
