The Redondo Beach City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to oppose the construction of a new power plant to replace the current AES Redondo Beach generating station on North Harbor Drive in South Redondo Beach.
The council also voted to appropriate $200,000 from the city's general fund to pay for the city's role as an intervenor in the California Energy Commission's new power plant permitting processes; to direct Mayor Mike Gin to explore the creation of a task force to find alternative uses for the AES property and come back in two weeks with a report; and to direct City Attorney Mike Webb to come back in four weeks with language for a moratorium on new construction on the AES property.

Them.
Off.
trying to keep everyone in the dark?
Shut off their electricity. That should take care of the problem.
But they have wind and sun and tidal generation available to them so they can charge their leafs and volts. Dumb asses!
Is San Onofre going to be shut down? What is Diablo's fate? Are LADWP's coal plants in AZ going to be shut down by Washington? Oh, no, that's right, DWP is going to go clean with solar.
Was that a misspell? Should it have been dolts?
The existing plant is considered an eyesore in the middle of very expensive property, in a city that doesn’t have much buildable space left.
One cool thing about the old plant, though. One of its by-products was warm water, so some of it was diverted to Seaside Lagoon, a really cute municipal swimming pool and picnic area, with a sandy beach and fountains and a slide. (On the down side, this was hard to keep sanitary enough to swim in.)
Convert the facility to a Guinness brewery.
Eyesore? There is this beautiful Wyland mural, 87' X 622', facing the ocean.
I actually remember seeing that mural when I was at at the Red weeks ago from Hollywood. Went to Bluewater for some business..
Would you classify it as an eyesore?
Nah. The only eyesores in that part of Socal are the ones located on Crenshaw/Lawndale ;)
Must be nice to just flush 200K down a toilet.
The party's over
They say all
Good things must end

Last I heard, we here in SoCal will have enough power this summer only if the summer is not comparatively warm. And the NIMBY’s and enviros still fight every power plant proposal that doesn’t involves slicing eagles into raptor burger or paving over the Mojave with mirrors. Even some of those are now being opposed. Insanity.
Oooppps. Sorry, my spelling sux latelee. LOL! Hmm? Dunderheads driving cheby dolts. Kinda like that. Do they have a clue how much of the “dreaded” CO2 is emitted in producing their beloved paper weights? Typical “We care and you don’t” attitude.
I don’t think anybody minds the mural. It’s the more industrial parts of the building and the big power lines and towers leading away from it.
Personally, I don’t live in RB, but near it, so I don’t have a dog in this fight. But if you want to follow this story, The Daily Breeze covers it.
I would also note that, years ago, the city council allowed some big apartments by the beach, which took out a lot of historic Craftsman houses and destroyed local charm. I think the city does not want to err like that again, and this legacy lurks in the background of the debate.
Why it effects all of us? What if you get in an accident in RB and all they have is newbies. Great seeing the old wood retire but losing good people simply because we elect people out in lala land will eventually catch up with us.
Not sure if those power line would or could necessarily disappear since they are the high voltage capacity lines. SCE would go through hell trying to get stuff like that back if they needed again.
Nice not being in crazy land anymore.
One hot summer day, people are going to throw their switches and all the circuts are going to exploded.
Hopefully, other parts of America are learning from this.
