Not until I went to the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.
So wrote Alexis de Tocqueville.
Yet, judged by the standards of those old pulpits aflame with righteousness, is America still a good country?

“Yet, though gospel to many, this belief has only the most shallow of religious, moral and philosophical roots. It seems grounded in a post-1960s ideology that holds that all freely chosen life-styles are equal, and to discriminate against any is the true social sin.
Needless to say, the traditional morality and the new morality are irreconcilable.”
Excellent point.
Fifty Five Million dead babies stare accusingly at America ...
America today is a disfunctional country that cannot solve its most basic problems, and is very much in decline.
Friends elsewhere advise me to get out. My point? It’s no longer our private secret.
No way
Bath-house Barry Benghazi is guilty of conspiring to cover up an act of war against the United States of America, and of giving aid and comfort to those who committed it.
We can bitch and moan about what you get if you average up everybody and divide by 310 million, but it’s our own personal duty to try to leave it a better place.
I saw lots of young parents with beautiful innocent children today at mass. As long as we have that, we have a way to be ‘good’. I strongly believe that bad and good are not far apart, and that change from good to bad, and bad to good can occur rapidly. I don’t know if we are good anymore, but I believe we can be. I’ve gotten to the point at which I care little about my own life, but do have faith that good things can happen in the future.
A good country? Depends upon where you are. The national government appears out of control and increasingly left-authoritarian. This is true of many state governments and many municipalities as well. I’d say a majority of the populace are still decent people who understand the American ideal enough to attempt to elect individuals who would try to set things right, but that number is shrinking. It’s not looking good. There’s always hope, though.
Well said.
Our help is in Name of The Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
That wouldn't surprise me.
It’s been a great ride, until who, FDR?, LBJ? You and I alone cannot leave it a “better place”, however nice saying such bromides sounds. The forces of change have been too strong for anyone person or group of persons to stop. Conservatives have done little or in any case not enough. I’ll never forget William F. Buckley dismissing and laughing on his TV show at the notion put to him by some Eastern European or Russian, I don’t remember who, that the Soviets were aiming their propaganda efforts at the US universities. Buckley said that the Soviets were mistaken in believing that American universities had any influence on the politics of the country. I kid you not, I heard it with my own lying ears.
No, not really. America is a pale, pathetic shadow of its former greatness. The country is in rapid economic, cultural, and moral decline. Between the “entitlement” mentality, the insane national debt, and constant dives into grotesque degeneracies like homo marriage, the signposts all point to America entering its end-game.
I’m just grateful my grandparents, uncles, aunts, and all their peers were lucky enough to die long before ever seeing the country they fought for and contributed so much to turn into such a travesty, with a marxist in the White House, and a culture that’s an open sewer.
Or, more personally, "what must I do to be saved?"
I would have said “yes” until I moved from the South out to a big city in the Northwest and started working with the most enormous collection of self-serving douche-bags. Many of them are foreign nationals, but that doesn’t change things. And I think we’re going to reap what we sow.
