I just went to the store for some ammo and ALL the 30-30 was gone, and most everythjign else was low in supply, but there was a ton of 30-06

Anyone here know why that might be? I was going to get a 30-30 or a 30-06 and decided on a nice used Marlin (like new) for $299

Should I maybe have gotten (or still get) a 30-06? (for when you want to reach out and touch someone at more than 600 yards)

That’s odd.

30.06 is rare as hens teeth these last 7 years

30-06 has been around for 100 years but is no longer a military caliber. Still a lot of 30-06 huntin’ rifles out there though. At Academy Sports, many of the larger hunting calibers seem to be in stock.

You should be able to pick up a new Howa or Weatherby 30-06 for $400 - $600. Remington 783 is also an option. (And a used one a lot cheaper.)
