Where you live in Californai may have lot to do with it. In the big cities (which I never visit), I have heard that people don’t seem to have as much freedom, but here in the boondocks we sure do.

It's worse than the numbers indicate.
Both NY and CA have a net loss of population after considerable immigration of non taxpaying individuals for the purpose of collecting welfare, SSI and disability benefits.
The number of taxpayers leaving is substantially higher.

My older brother is in Ca. and most of my family lives on Long Island, NY. Hate to see them get ripped off on paying so much in taxes. NY property tax rates are criminal how much they extort from the productive citizens. They get jacksquat in return.
