The caller wanted to know whether Lloyd Cook had any 9 mm ammunition in stock.
I asked him how much did he want, said Cook, owner of an Independence gun range, and he said, All of it.
Across the country, bullets are flying off store shelves as people stockpile ammunition.
The big question: Why?
There is no good answer for this, said Kevin Jamison, a Gladstone lawyer and spokesman for the Western Missouri Shooters Alliance. Panic buying seems to account for some of the shortage, but I dont believe it can be all of it.
Some point to concerns that the government might limit ammo purchases in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. Others blame the Department of Homeland Security, which has a big purchase in the works.
The rush to buy isnt rational, said Larry Swickard, a member of the Western Missouri alliance.
But it seems to be having a ripple effect in that when people see a significant number of people buying up all the ammo they can find, they follow suit for fear of being left out with none for themselves, Swickard said.
Maybe we are just doing this to ourselves.
And, as always happens when demand shoots up and supply bottoms out, buyers are paying a dear price.
Before Christmas, Cook said, you could buy a brick of .22s 500 rounds for $18. Now Im hearing people paying $60 or $70 for one, he said.
Retailers still cant keep those small-caliber bullets in stock.
We havent got any .22 calibers were out, Cook said. I dont know who has any. Anytime anyone gets some, customers buy em up within a day.
Wal-Mart stores are limiting sales to three boxes per customer per day.

If I told you what I paid for the huge quantities of ammo I’ve stockpiled over the past 10yrs, for the calibers & gauge I have - .22LR, .357mag, .357sig, .45cal ACP HP & FMJ, 5.56mm/.223cal, 7.62 x 51mm/.308cal, .50cal Beowulf, .50cal BMG, 12ga - you’d cry. I kept the receipts in the file folders for each firearm.
It was so cheap and plentiful, that I’d buy both locally and online every month, even while expending a fair amount at my (former) Family Farm’s outdoor range. Employees and friends laughed at my “conservation” efforts. They ain’t laughing now. I’ve sold a few choice ‘extra’ firearms to Family, along with some ammo, but that’s it. All done now.
Anyone thinking this is some kind of trick - to try to stimulate the economy? When the perception is that an item is about to become scarce - people buy - much like a pending snow storm...Of course, as long as Obama is in office - politicians still thinking about bans of weapons and magazines - it’s just like a pending snow storm - however the reality is that, this storm could permanently bury us all!
We have been shopping around locally and everybody has a 2 box limit. We looked on line and found the a place in Ohio where we can buy it for 1/2 price of what they are charging locally.
Good for you looking ahead. We have been stockpiling too but not the 45 ACP that we need right now. It is VERY expensive locally.
Brass and lead will be the new gold when the collapse comes. No collapse you say? Show me one thing that is happening in America today to stop it. Ammo will feed you... clothe you... protect you and can be bartered. Gold will just weigh you down and get you killed if it gets bad enough.

A mostly-nonsense sentence, from an ignorant media drone. These people should learn the terminology.
This sentence would lead me to ask the question: why aren't powder, primers and brass selling as well as bullets?
What my local WalMart had on the shelves could all fit inside a shoe box, child size.
That’s the most profound statement I’ve read in a long time.
The rush to buy from millions of last minute gun buyers, of all the numbers of registered owners are all the many more unregistered, America is preparing to fight back against the enemies of the nation.
Hee;s some of my online sources. Cor-Bon/Glazer & Wilson Combat have it and it’s not “that bad”, but more expensive than in previous years, but readily available. I just got a large shipment of HPs and PowerBall:

“why aren’t powder, primers and brass selling as well as bullets?”
Have you tried finding any? Locally Bass Pro Shop is always sold out. Every online supplier is “currently out of stock” so, yeah, they are selling as well.
I got a new Dillon press for Christmas and I’ve already used up all the .308 bullets (projectiles not cartridges)that I have.
I know what you mean.
I load my own.
Picked up the fixins when the price was cheap.
Sunday I loaded 400 rds .38 special from what I have in my stash.
Even if you throw in the brass the cost was $25 max.
39 lbs of gold = $1,000,000. If you think that is too heavy I will take it off your hands for free.
plenty here - i was there 2x last week - every pistol caliber and even 7.62x39

They are.
Starting to see and hear of more ammo arriving, especially at wall mart. However, it sells out quick. .223 and 9m is coming in, but usually sells out within minutes. I talked to the wall mart clerk. Colt ARs are showing up again at his store, but the last two were purchased by family members of the wall mart employees. Like I wrote in earlier threads, there is a lot of ammo and ar rifles being tracked as they leave the distro centers, then employees and their friends get to it before it can hit the shelf.
Check into reloading supplies, bullets are flying off the shelves as well as powder, brass and primers.
We may be approaching the time when 39 pounds of ammo may be more usefull than $1,000,000.
