LA Archbishop Gomez keeps Mahony's promise to push for immigration reform

President Obama said he expects Congress to introduce an immigration reform bill next month. The Los Angeles Archdiocese has played a key role in advocating for change. Before he was stripped of his duties for mishandling sex abuse cases, Cardinal Roger Mahony was a leading voice on immigration reform.

Salas says that Mahony’s successor, Archbishop Jose Gomez, might not be speaking at rallies as much and certainly maintains a lower public profile, but he is very active in pushing for immigration reform.

“I was in a meeting with President Obama a couple of weeks ago at the White House with religious leaders,” Gomez says. “And we all came out of the meeting with the conviction that now is the time and that the president is committed to work on immigration reform. So we are enthusiastic about the possibility of an immigration reform law soon.”

Gomez is the chairman of the Immigration Committee of US Catholic Bishops, which makes him a key voice on immigration matters not only in the church, but also in Washington as well. Both he and Salas agree that this is a moment when there’s a real chance to see an actual immigration reform bill come out of Congress, especially with the President as committed as he is.

If comprehensive immigration reform passes, Salas says that other religious groups will have played a part, but the Catholic Church played the lead role.

“I would say the standard bearers have been the Catholic Church,” she says. “You have to give the Catholic Church credit for also being in this modern version of the fight for immigrant rights, for being very much in the front and center for a long time.”

Anyone who wants more Hispanic immigrants wants more pro-abortion voters.

Anyone who wants to import more pro-abortion voters is pro-abortion.

LA's Latino Catholic leaders push for immigration reform
Ruxandra Guidi | November 21st, 2012, 4:34pm

"Many Roman Catholic clergy like Ajic are joining forces with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles and with other advocacy organizations on this new campaign. In the year ahead they want the federal government to pass immigration reform, and to stop the deportation of undocumented immigrants with no criminal records."

"Los Angeles’ Catholic Archbishop Jose Gomez has also joined religious leaders across the political spectrum who regard the reelection of President Obama as a new opportunity to enact comprehensive immigration reform."

It's robbery..making others pay for this mess.

No order..no rules.. just preparing for more dem voters. after these are fast tracked, millions more flock in..reason why the dems won't close/enforce the border.

Some of these guys in those pointy hats should put them on sideways. What country is he in ? Whatever happened to “Render to Caesar what is Caesars”?

When is the treatment of American citizens in Mexico and their rights vs US treatment of Mexicans going to be an issue when we discuss amnesty ?

This is a question: Should Mexican citizens when in the US be given the same rights American citizens are given while in Mexico? This has yet to appear on any US legislator’s questionaire from either chamber....ASK YOUR FEDERAL LEGISLATORS WHY IT HASN’T

What makes it necessary for US to subjugate our sovereignty because of available cheap labor ?

Ever hear of reciprocal aggrements ? These are arranged to protect the rights of American citizens working or living in other countries.

Why is it when it comes to citizens of other countries we are required to offer them the same privledges as we do to US citizens? But when it comes to US citizens who get in trouble or attempt to do business in other countries they do not get the same treatment their citizens get.

Americans can’t own coast land in Mexico. And get no title to it elsewhere. If they run out of cash they’ll get unceremoniously sent back or put in jail untill some relative comes up with the “fresh”. That’s just for starters as for granting them voting privledges yea let’s give Mexican citizens that right when American citizens vote in their elections .

Let them go home. It is that simple, this is NOT their country. They should be supported by their own country.

What’s wrong with the immigration policies that we’ve got now? What needs to be “reformed”? What’s the problem anyway? Still too many Mexican Nationals living in Mexico trying to get the hell out?

I’m Catholic, and I say if Gomez and Mahoney want amnesty, let them pay taxes to pay for it, starting with real estate taxes on each church in southern California.

Gomez can STFU as far as I am concerned. And I am Catholic. You NEVER see these guys pushing for taking the illegals in private Catholic schools, because the parishioners wouldn’t put up with being forced to pay their tuition, and the hierarchy knows this damn good and well. But these same people will insist the US taxpayer give little Joselita instate tuition rates, while her LEGAL immigrant cousin from out of state has to pay full whack. It was one thing before we had womb to the tomb benefits to push for immigrants - quite another thing to push for “free for all” now.
