Rand Paul, Mike Lee, Ted Cruz threaten hold on gun restrictions

Pushing back against the Obama administration’s call for stricter gun control laws, Republican Sens. Rand Paul, Mike Lee and Ted Cruz are threatening to block any legislation they think tramples on the Second Amendment - marking the latest salvo from a trio of lawmakers who have been busy banding together to assert their vision on the direction of their party.

The tea party favorites warned Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that they will hold up any bill that serves “as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions” when the body returns from its two-week spring break.

“The Second Amendment to the Constitution protects citizens’ right to self-defense,” they told the Nevada Democrat in a letter that was released Tuesday. “It speaks to history’s lesson that government cannot be in all places at all times, and history’s warning about the oppression of a government that tries.”

The letter aims to pre-empt Mr. Reid’s plan for the Senate to consider a comprehensive gun package after the Easter break. The bill would try to crack down on gun trafficking and include a requirement for universal background checks on gun sales. An assault-weapons ban is not a part of the package, although it could be brought up by an amendment.

The White House said the senators’ plan is “unfortunate” and that the lawmakers threatening a filibuster are out of step with the vast majority of Americans. The Obama administration has consistently said that nothing the president is advocating infringes on citizens’ Second Amendment rights.

“Where are the rest of the cowardly Republican do-nothings.?”

Here in Ohio there is a stark contrast. I wrote to Rob Portman regarding the DHS bullet buys and backdoor gun control. No reply. Nothing, not even a form letter. Not a letter saying “drop dead”. Not a picture of Portman planning a big fat gay wedding for his son, nothing.

So, I wrote Sherrod Brown. In 10 minutes I got a canned reply. By the end of the day, I got a real reply, addressing my email point by point. While the answers were unsatisfying, they were answers.

Republicans are swirling the toilet bowl and doing nothing to stop it.

How many martinis (or doobies) do you have to do at lunch to make that statement with a straight face at an afternoon presser?

The Obama administration has consistently said that nothing the president is advocating infringes on citizens’ Second Amendment rights.

Indeed, that is a true statement. The current regime has consistently said this. It is, however, a lie.

Will be interesting to see how many folks support them....I suspect it will be more than you think. And I don’t think McCain or Graham will open their yaps with any kind of cuckoo bird - or whacko - type comments this time.

I think this whole gun control debacle is a diversion from the left so that the Benghazi investigation stays on the back burner.

Ohio GOP will screw you every chance they get. What penalty could portman pay for dipleasing the electorate...? He loses an electoon then goes on to be a lobbiest making millions? Keep in mind that gop controlled ohio just made it a felony last year to have a “hidden compartment” in your car. I guess in the world where they live no one every buys a used car that might have been modified by a previous owner. We’re all supposed to lease a new lexus every two years. They simply don’t care what the sheep think.

“They simply don’t care what the sheep think.”

As you said, they don’t care. Portman will make millions regardless of what voters do.

All I can do is not vote for Portman, ever again, for any office. Consider that a done deal.

Rand Paul, Mike Lee, Ted Cruz can raise a lot of hell and maybe get something good accomplished or, at least, slow down something bad.
Perhaps they should ask for a special prosecutor to investigate Mr. Holder and his gun running schemes and get some sworn testimony.
The last Freedom Filibuster was pretty successful. Even Sen. Mitch McConnall helped out. He might do so again, elections and all coming up. He does need to do something, an act of faith, in public, to appeal to Conservatives and get reelected.
