Former Cocoa police Chief Eric Liff believes in gun-owner rights, but he resigned from the Seminole County Gun & Archery Association recently because it required him to join the NRA in order to regularly use its shooting range.
Liff said the rule seems particularly wrong because the range sits on 62 acres in Geneva that the association leases from Seminole County for just $10 a month.
He and many other law-enforcement officials don't agree with some National Rifle Association policies, notably the group's support of armor-piercing bullets, dubbed "cop killers."
Liff said he's also concerned that the powerful NRA more often speaks for gun makers, not owners, in Washington. He said he wants the Seminole range to drop its membership requirement.
"I object very strongly to them dictating political policy," said Liff, a Republican. "It's improper."

Any cop who doesn't stand with us by definition stands against us.
Eff em.
Better have a rock solid, long term lease or else they'll soon be tossed by a vindictive political class.
**** notably the group’s support of armor-piercing bullets, dubbed “cop killers.” ****
Handgun control Inc (The Brady Center) is the cause of this. Police and the NRA used to be close. HCI looked for a way to drive a wedge between these two groups so they came up with the COP KILLER BULLET!
The hard core Teflon coated bullet was never released for public use, but when one box was found on a drug boat, HCI started to scream, then the MSM chimed in.
People who own guns, but don't joinand stand and fight withthe National Rifle Association are freeloaders. Expecting other people to do the work of defending your rights is an all but guaranteed way to lose them.
Aren't those the lead free ones?
I never know they were called Handgun Control Inc.
Every legal deer rifle cartridge will penetrate your standard bullet proof vest.
The NRA correctly identified the camel’s nose and told the Left to pack sand.
Yes, HCI adopted its current name years ago. At least the old name was honest as to the group’s intentions. Now, everything is deliberately vague and “nuanced”.
Yes, that was its name for a number of years. Apparently the name was either too accurate or wasn't all-encompassing enough. Here's an FR thread from 2004 on them:
Oh, please. A standard rifle bullet will pierce personnel armor. What are they wearing, depleted uranium? Besides, if the potentates weren't trying to keep us peasants from wearing armor, they couldn't call it that anyway.
The gun club I belong to requires membership in a gun rights organization in order to join. It doesn’t have to be the NRA. It could be GOA, SAF, or any other national, state or local gun rights organization.
I don’t support the NRA, either. But, not for the reasons this cop cites. I don’t support the NRA because they are too Liberal for my tastes!
I gave up my NRA membership back in 1986 when the NRA let the Hughes Amendment slip through the cracks, and then, convinced Reagan to sign that POS legislation into law.
I’m a proud member of the Gun Owners of America, now.
NRA can kiss my big, fat, hairy ArmaLite butt!
P.S. - FYI, watch the video and you will see how, using chicanery in the middle of the night, Charlie Rangel (acting as the Chairman), bullied the House into passing the Hughes Amendment back in 1986:

This is how intelligent our opponents are. Too often, we think they do not understand firearms.
But, if the "cop killer" theme worked, then they could go after high-power rifle cartridges for the exact same reason.
In fact, as I witnessed 20 years ago in NYC, the media reported a search of an apartment found a "sniper rifle capable of killing a human at over 1 mile". The actual rifle was a Mauser bolt action with a scope.
But, because the apartment was in a high-rise, this man would have been able to shoot New Yorkers a mile away.
We all know this as bull-feces. But, by starting with the "cop killer" theme, this rifle was now capable of killing police over a mile away through their bullet-proof vest.
These people will not stop.
Every ban or law is meant to lead to the next ban or law.

So will virtually any hunting broad head fired from a recurve or compound bow as well as crossbow bolts. A good quality knife will also pierce a kevlar vest as well. The term “Cop Killer Bullet” is just a canard perpetrated by the left to advance their political agenda.
The same membership requirement holds true for the Indian River County range. I wish they would relax the rule to allow membership in any such organization like the 2nd Amendment Sisters as an alternative. They were much more agile when it came to the post-Katrina gun grab.
The NRA never “supported” bullets expressly designed to penetrate body armor. This cop should know better.
What the hoplophobes tried to do is ban any ammo that could penetrate body armor. They knew very well that it would also ban medium and high power rifle cartridges.
The NRA put a stop to it. Any cop that can’t figure out that rationale shouldn’t be wearing a badge, be cause he/she is incapable of independent thought.

That POS legislation, as you call it, is the reason you can now buy rifles, shotguns and ammo across state lines.
Back in 1968, we were saddled with ban on sales across state lines with that travesty the 1968 Gun Control Law.
The Hughes amendment was put in the legislation as a “Poison Pill” to kill it. It didn’t.
Five years later they began singing a different tune demanding bans on semi-auto rifles.
Thanks. I see one of thir goals is/was establishing gun-free zones for schools. A lot of good that has done.
