Gun deaths are shaped by race in America. Whites are far more likely to shoot themselves, and African Americans are far more likely to be shot by someone else.
The statistical difference is dramatic, according to a Washington Post analysis of data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A white person is five times as likely to commit suicide with a gun as to be shot with a gun; for each African American who uses a gun to commit suicide, five are killed by other people with guns.
Where a person lives matters, too. Gun deaths in urban areas are much more likely to be homicides, while suicide is far and away the dominant form of gun death in rural areas. States with the most guns per capita, such as Montana and Wyoming, have the highest suicide rates; states with low gun ownership rates, such as Massachusetts and New York, have far fewer suicides per capita.
Suicides and homicides are highly charged human dramas. Both acts shatter families, friends and sometimes communities. But the reactions are as different as black and white, and those differences shape the nation’s divided attitudes toward gun control.
For instance, African Americans tend to be stronger backers of tough gun controls than whites. A Washington Post-ABC News poll this month found that about three-quarters of blacks support stronger controls, compared with about half of whites. The poll also found that two-thirds of city dwellers support stronger gun controls, while only about a third of rural residents back them.

I imagine black gunownership is much higher, but given how many blacks have felony convictions (and therefore legally cannot own a gun), I imagine that's a strong disincentive to answering about gun ownership. I can legally own a gun and still would not tell a pollster if I were asked that question, it's none of their dang business.

Good point. Not trusting the WP, I found more information at www.suicidology.com. Massachusetts does have a low overall suicide rate (8.1), and Montana, Wyoming, etc., do have high rates (about 23). But Virginia and Georgia have overall suicide rates of about 12, about half those of Montana and Wyoming — yet have gun laws comparable to Montana and Wyoming, not Mass.
The crux of the Post’s article is the much higher incidence of suicide with firearms among whites than blacks.
In its rush to advocate for gun control, the Post ignored the obvious mathematical implications of their own story: states with higher percentages of whites (plus Native Americans who have high suicide rates) and lower percentages of blacks, will have higher total suicide rates than states with the opposite.
Per suicidology.com, the overall 2010 suicide rate for whites is 14.1, but 5.1 for blacks. Suicide-by-firearms rates in the WP story track closely to the overall rate for both races. Suicide-by-firearms rates vary by race because suicide rates by race vary, not the other way around.
Differences in homicide and suicide rates by race are a worthy topic, but there is a different story here than the Post would have us believe.

The graphics in the article and the associated info-graphic linked to the article have that data in detail. Overall the gun homicide rate for blacks is ten times the rate for whites, and the state by state data shows the wildly different homicide rates between whites and blacks.
I'm glad that the Washington Post was brave enough to publish the data, as inconvenient as it may seem. In reality I think they are trying to salvage the gun control arguments by turning them from homicide prevention to suicide prevention.
Basically, if you take suicides out of the picture, then gun violence in the USA is pretty much a problem of the black underclass in major urban areas. Needless to say it is a consequence of gangs, cultural values, and a rampant illegal drug industry in those areas.
The state by state details show what many people have said for years. Namely that gun violence rates in the USA are similar to gun violence rates in the European countries we all hear so much about being "safe from gun violence" if you subtract the urban gang violence in predominately African American communities.

Yes, crime is very localized and very race dependent. Young black males, about 3-4% of the population, commit 50% of the murders - and blacks of all ages and sexes make up 50% of all murder victims.

True. My 83 yr old father, who has stated that there will be blood on the front porch before he gives up his guns, watches the cable show “The First 48”. The other day he asked/stated: “Have you noticed that 90% of the episodes are about blacks killing blacks and the other 10% are hispanics killing hispanics in cities like Birmingham, Cleveland, Houston, Louisville, Dallas and Atlanta. I can’t recall ever seeing an episode in the white neghborhoods of these cities or where a white person kills someone.”

Culture and geography can affect human behavior, but we know through genetics that race is of about the same evolutionary consequence as eye color. I claim the moral high ground because I'm not using archaic race theory rubbish that was debunked a century ago.

For example, in Illinois the homicide rate for blacks is 214 per million people, the rate for whites is 16 per million. The suicide rate for blacks is 8 per million, for whites 40 per million. The gun ownership rate is 20%.
I was making no reference to genetics, GR. I referred to the continent of Africa in general, and much of what I said can still be seen in some of the deepest, darkest parts of the continent.
I’m also not referring to their intelligence, as there are millions of bright, articulate black men and women in the world such as Dr. Carson, Walter Williams, Herman Cain, Former Florida Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll, the late Frederick Douglass and Dr. Martin Luther King, Col. West, Clarence Thomas, and Dr. Sowell.
It is within every one of us, regardless of race, to become great people. It is only in America that the pursuit of that greatness is guaranteed.

Slaves were brought simply because the Americas ran out of people, and when malaria came back the land couldn't even be resettled. Black people from areas with sickle cell disease were suitable.
