A distraught mother as told how she pleaded with young robbers to spare her toddler's life before they shot him dead as he slept in his stroller.

Sherry West was pushing her 13-month-old son Antonio yards from their home in Brunswick, Georgia, early yesterday morning when she was approached by two African-American boys.

She told how one of them, who looked about 15, demanded money from her and threatened to kill her if she didn't give him any. She told him she didn't have any.

'He said: "Well, I'm going to kill your baby", and I said "Please don't kill my baby."

Ms West added: 'I put my arms over my baby and then he shoved me and then he shot my baby right in the head.'

Ms West began CPR on Antonio but it was in vain and the infant, who had been sleeping when he was shot, died at the scene of the 9am attack

The child's mother suffered a bullet wound to her leg which needed hospital treatment but was allowed home soon afterwards.

Antonio's father Louis Santiago said he wished he had been there to protect his son.

This story makes my BS meter start to twitch uncontrollably.

Mine's twitching, too. I saw her on tv a little while ago and though she dry-sniffled a little, not a single tear was shed. Nor did it looked like she'd been crying.

The police had been asked if she was being considered as a suspect and they said they won't comment. Sounds like their BS meter is twitching, too.

Something about this story stinks..just doesn’t pass the smell test..could it be true, absolutely, but I wouldnt be surprised if this isn’t another Susan Smith in the making so I will withhold judgment

I posted my comment BEFORE I knew about arrests being made..so I take it back..hang these bastards..and yes this is EXACTLY why people need to carry guns..I will wait for Piers Morgan to comment..yeah, he wont because this story doesn’t fit into his take away everyone’s gun agenda

Well, I see there are doubts about this.

FWIW, I used to work in Greenwich Village when there were street punks in the area. We always made it a policy to carry a twenty-dollar bill in our pocket, so we could hand it over if we were held up.

The guys doing the holdups were usually drug addicts looking for a quick fix, and they got really, really angry if you didn’t give them some cash right away.

That could be the explanation here. Give us the cash NOW, or else. That’s pretty much what she says they said to her.

I thought of that too. However, shooting would depend on a number of circumstances, the locale, the size of the gun etc. I do not know Brunswick Georgia. However, it looks like they caught some suspects.

Sabrina Elkins, the sister of the older suspect in the baby’s slaying, said Friday evening that ... [t]ypically, he would come by her house in the morning and they’d go to breakfast.

Katrina Freeman said Saturday the shooter can’t be her nephew, Elkins, because he showed up at her house Thursday at 8:15 a.m. — roughly an hour before the killing. She said she cooked eggs, grits and sausage for breakfast and that Elkins accompanied her and her children to run errands when they left at about 11:30 a.m.

“He was with us the whole time,” said Freeman, adding that she gave police the same account of her nephew’s whereabouts.
