Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D) and Sen. Rand Paul (R), in separate forums Tuesday, struck common ground on some of the thorniest issues surrounding immigration reform. Is a bipartisan deal close?
In the immigration reform debate now under way in Washington, Democrats and Republicans are taking a steady march in one direction: toward one another.
On Tuesday morning, a leading Democratic advocate of immigration reform said his party would not require a special path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, in keeping with a key Republican demand.
At nearly the same moment some two blocks away, a 2016 Republican presidential contender and tea party favorite embraced legal status and potential citizenship for the nation’s 12 million undocumented people, which have been Democratic desires for more than a decade.
That's not to say the immigration reform debate is over – far from it.
But when Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D) of Illinois, a Chicago progressive who got himself arrested outside the White House protesting Arizona’s tough immigration law, and Sen. Rand Paul (R) of Kentucky, a heartthrob of the conservative activist set and heir to the Paul family libertarian fame, stake out common ground on immigration reform? That’s saying something.
Senator Paul joined a list of GOP immigration reformers who say they’re willing to provide a pathway to legal status for 12 million illegal immigrants, provided it's paired with enhanced border security and no unique path to American citizenship.

How can someone like Rand Paul who so gets what is happening to the US Constitution and the US economy because of central banking, be so wrong on amnesty, which will ensure the political victory of those who are intentionally destroying the US Constitution and US economy that he is striving to save?
Unbelievable.
This puts me at odds with Rand Paul. He is showing his colors as a true libetarian. They have always been for open borders.
I think folks in Kentucky don't see the waves of illegals like we do even here in Nashville

folks don't seem to get that...we have never gotten over 40% and that was for a favorite son and was local to his state
now the older Cubans and Nicas have died out so there is literally no dependent hispanic GOP bloc now and their cultural red flags are just above the failing grade that plagues most blacks
the votes to mine that will come out and can make winners is the white conservative vote
but we just know given nobody runs one
The only thing the government should be giving illegals is a map to where they came from. All this talk about living in the shadows doesn’t interest me in the least. They broke the law to get here, they are breaking it by staying here and I’m not going to lose 2 seconds of sleep concerning shadows.

Did the 1986 Amnesty actually bring benefit to the United States or did it bring undue burden?
Let me start by telling you what you already know. Calling your Senators may never change their minds. However, they still need to get the calls so they understand how many people oppose them and that is especially true for those in your state.
Calling members of Congress if you aren’t their constituent is a waste of time, they don’t care unless you are from their district. But Boehner and other members of the Republican Leadership are different, as Speaker of the House, he needs to listen to you, or he isn’t doing his job, as Speaker he is a Representative of all U.S. Citizens! This is what is so maddening, these people (illegals) aren’t citizens, we are, and the majority of citizens, poll after poll shows… citizens don’t support amnesty! So they are actually concerning themselves with the interests of foreign nationals over the American Citizens they were elected to represent. That needs to be said to them, over and over. They have become elitists, they know better than we do, once they take that attitude, they are no longer representatives they are oppressors.
One of the things I am encouraging people to do is ask for a Congressional Report to be done, before they even bring a CIR bill to the Congress to consider. The study needs to determine:
Did the 1986 Amnesty actually bring benefit to the United States or did it bring undue burden? Here is why I think this is important.
· I have interviewed personally ICE officers, in Ohio, Alabama and Oklahoma who are responsible for processing immigrants for deportation after they have served their jail sentence. All 3 offices have told me independently, 99.9% of the people they process to deport coming out of jail, are 1986 Amnesty recipients.
· Prison Guards in high security prisons in California, who I have personally spoken with have told me, 90% of the harden criminals in jail with life sentences in those California jails are the children of 1986 Amnesty recipients. Their parents had no commitment to the United States, and they don’t either. Their parents had no respect for the law, and they don’t either.
· In a report that the Center for Immigration Studies did in 1996, 10 years after the Amnesty, they found that this group of people, once legalized, went on to burden the U.S. taxpayers in a huge way. See the report here: http://www.cis.org/IRCAAmnesty-10YearReview

· The 1986 Amnesty set off the biggest wave of illegal immigration in U.S. history, it was nearly 4 million in 1986, but estimates are between 11-20 million this time. Before we do that, we need to know if 1986 Amnesty brought over all good to America first. No one has taken the time or effort to find that out, it is just a simply “solution” because they already know how to do it. But it is bad right out of the starting blocks because:
1. They haven’t determined the impact to America from 1986 Amnesty
2. They don’t have provisions this time to prohibit access from Social Service programs except at the Federal level, they will still be able to access state and local, which is where the bulk of the expense occurs.
3. They have included people who have committed some types of crime in their Amnesty plan, and they shouldn’t allow anyone who has had a run in with law enforcement
4. They haven’t addressed absolute employer enforcement by requiring mandatory E-Verify, and stiff fines and jail time by law breaking employers
5. They haven’t addressed the problem of birthright citizenship, changing if necessary the constitution which should require that a natural born American should have on parent who is an American Citizen.
6. They haven’t addressed the issue of granting an education of anyone K-12 or College at taxpayer expense who isn’t here with legal status.
They want to make us think this will serve us well, well it isn’t really comprehensive to begin with, and if this is such a good idea, PROVE IT! Show us the results of what legalizing 4 million illegal aliens did for us in 1986.
I have been calling everyone to demand this study, SHOW US THE PROOF! Then we’ll decide if we want to do this again.

Damn.. the hordes from Mexico will eventually overwhelm us through demographic trends... Yet our “reps” feel the need to hurry the process along...
I remember libertarians always being very vocal about wanting open-borders, and having America be like a big bus-station with people just coming and going, no passports, no nothing. But after 9/11, and then especially the big hubbub/backlash against Bush’s amnesty in 2007, they tended to really quiet down and soft-peddle the issue.
But I sure remember their arguments, and it’s one of the reasons I really, really have a deep distrust with them on this issue.
Any politician in favor of amnesty is against America.
This is obscene in any way.

Why I No Longer Stand With Rand

In 2010, I endorsed Rand Paul for US Senate, and my Political Action Committee that supports anti-amnesty candidates contributed to and raised money for his campaign. Rand Paul’s platform stated that “I do not support amnesty. Those who come here should respect our laws.” He supported Arizona’s SB 1070, opposed birthright citizenship, an “electronic fence” and stated that “our greatest national security threat is our lack of security at the border.”
Now, I am regretting my endorsement and contribution to his campaign. Since Obama’s reelection, Rand Paul has repeatedly waffled on immigration. In a speech before the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, he completely flip-flopped.
Rand Paul began his speech in Spanish and it went downhill from there. His speech was filled with virtually every single discredited pro-amnesty cliché you could imagine. He said our conversation on immigration must begin “by acknowledging we aren’t going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.” He said he opposed amnesty, but then went on to promote just that arguing “The solution doesn’t have to be amnesty or deportation-a middle ground might be called probation where those who came illegally become legal through a probationary period.”
The problem is that not one congressman or major commentator has called for deporting all 12 million illegal immigrants. Rather, we argue that strict enforcement of employer sanctions and allowing local police to cooperate in immigration enforcement will encourage most illegals to, in Mitt Romney’s words, “self-deport.”
Rand Paul’s speech actually came out against E-Verify, which even John McCain and Barack Obama support. That’s not the only way that Paul is softer than Obama on immigration. Both Obama and the Gang of 8 say that the illegal immigrants must pay a penalty for legal status, while Rand Paul told reporters after his speech he is not “not as a big a stickler” on these items, because the illegals would not be able to afford the fines.
Rand Paul said that Hispanics were “natural” Republicans who the GOP should be able to attract through “Defense of the unborn and defense of traditional marriage.” In reality, according to exit polls after the 2012 election, whites opposed gay marriage 50-47%, while Hispanics supported gay marriage 59-32%. Moreover, Hispanics are twice as likely as whites to have abortions. This, along with the fact that Hispanics are more likely to support big government and describe themselves as politically liberal than whites is a major factor for why they vote Democratic.
Instead, Rand Paul said that the only reason why the GOP is losing the Hispanic vote is because we have turned them off with “harsh rhetoric over immigration.” Paul doesn’t give a single example of what that “harsh rhetoric” was. Presumably it could have included his pre-flip flop position on immigration.
Rand Paul concluded his speech by quoting (in Spanish) the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Paul did not mention that Neruda served as a Senator for the Chilean Communist Party.
Rand Paul has poised himself as a GOP insurgent, but his stance on immigration is in line with the usual Democratic and RINO establishment. It’s not surprising that Lindsey Graham and Chuck Schumer both praised Rand Paul’s speech. I doubt the grassroots conservatives who elected Rand to Senate and whose support he expects if he runs for president in 2016 feel the same.
When I endorsed Rand Paul, I did not expect to agree with him on every issue. I respect people with strongly held beliefs regardless of what they are. Most importantly, I felt that I could trust him to maintain his campaign promises. I was wrong. Oh how I long for a Republican leader who exhibits true courage and integrity. That’s the stuff leaders are made of. By endorsing the McCain-Obama immigration policy when it became politically expedient, Rand Paul has shown himself to be just another politician.

I emailed Tancredo several years ago when he was still in Washington thanking him for having the intestinal fortitude to take an unpopular stand in many circles on this issue. To my surprise he personally snail mailed a letter to me with details on what he had tried to do in the recent past at that time to bring attention to and provide solutions. I could tell it was not robosigned either. He had signed it. No one is a saint, but I got the impression, Tom was the real deal that day.
