'DOCTOR Who bosses are lining up Matt Smith’s exit for Christmas — when he will regenerate into the 12th Time Lord.

Insiders say the festive special will be Matt’s last outing as The Doctor, after a triumphant four years in the role.

The actor has made no bones about his ambition to crack Hollywood and has filmed new movie How To Catch A Monster with Ryan Gosling, which is released next year.

Sources say bosses already have an idea of who they want to replace him, with work on the special due to get under way later in the year.

Matt’s contract is understood to expire in November but we understand he doesn’t want it renewed.

Filming on the 50th anniversary episode, airing in November, will begin next month.'

I prefer Smith over Tennant, he’s not so manic.

Its teatime fun sci-fi for a family audience. It goes out 6-7pm on Saturdays in the UK.

And whilst the older stuff may be tacky with naff sets, the newer stuff looks great.

I did meet Tom Selleck in HI. They were shooting a scene where I was staying. He was a regular decent guy.

And I am sure you know, he is a conservative, as well as a prominent NRA member.

Both of which have caused him a lot of trouble in his career.

Never met him, though the wife did. Lived very near his ranch in Hidden Valley in Ventura county, and near where they filmed "Robin's Nest" on Oahu.

What is Doctor Who?

Should I know?

It would take you at least 30 years to catch up. You could start by Googling him.

The Good Doctor is a Time Lord (with two hearts), from the planet Gallifrey, now almost the last of his kind after the planet's destruction in the Time War with the Dalek Empire. He is a temporal regulator who travels in time around the Universe in his TARDIS which is disguised as a blue London Police Call Box. Watched over by The Guardians of Time, the Time Lords live thousands of years and regenerate in a new body if they experience corporal death. Dr. Who has an affinity for humans and has traveled with human companions. Most of us old timers have seen around seven or eight generations of Doctor Who, beginning with reruns on PBS of Jon Pertwee(popular actor Sean Pertwee's dad).

I liked Leela - “Warrior of the Sevateem”, always ready to use deadly force when warranted much to the Doctor’s chagrin.

OH yeah! I remember her...another good Companion! Wasn’t she the one who took K9? It’s been so long I can’t recall but I do miss K9.

The thought has been thrown around about a female Doctor.

You may remember they actually did it with DoctorDonna.

That is a good summary. Although I was familiar with DW from the very beginning I didn't really get into it until Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. It was playing at times on US public TV. There were also a series of books which were more available in the US back then.

In the 80's there was a DW tour in the US. It was in a trailer that parked at the stations where DW was airing.

Mrs p6 and our kids treated me to a visit at the WQED studios in Pittsburgh. Baker had been replaced by Peter Davison who did not make a good Doctor, at least to me back then.

Now I like them all. Eccleston, Tennant and Smith have been wonderful.

Really it's the perfect concept for a timeless series. Each Doctor reboots with new personality.

A few years ago the question of limited regeneration was debated in the DW community with the consensus being that there actually can be more than 9 or 12 regenerations. Sadly I don't recall how it was worked out.

A week or so ago BBC had a couple of the earliest episodes, one about a Dalik hibernation temple and another about the Mayans, of course both were in black and white. I really enjoyed them, I heard many of the original 1960 era episodes sadly are lost, it would be historical if for some reason they were found, restored and optionally digitally remastered and colorized on Bluray discs.

Like the remastered Star trek series which was very well done.

I will watch Doctor Who even if its over 40 years old and in black and white before I become a fan of the stupidly directed series “The Walking Dead” of which occasionally has a thread here on FR, beware the thread is guarded by a fanatic that won’t tolerate common sense discussions.

IIRC BBC is doing a special on each of the Doctors complete with an episode once a month to celebrate the anniversary.

I remember watching the "Mayan" episode when it first aired. Nothing like feeling old, LOL!
