U.S. Still Making Payments to Relatives of Civil War Vets
The U.S. government spends over $40 billion a year to compensate veterans and their family members for service in conflicts as far back as the Civil War.
According to an analysis conducted by the Associated Press, the costs of veteran compensation for previous wars are as follows:
• $12 billion a year for the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the first Persian Gulf War
• $22 billion a year for Vietnam
• $5 billion a year for World War II
• $2.8 billion for the Korean War
• $20 million for World War I
• $50,000 a year to 10 living recipients of benefits tied to the 1898 Spanish-American War
• Two payments of $876 a year to two children of Civil War veterans
Using federal payment data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, the AP identified disability and survivor benefits to conduct the analysis.

Who is worried about the $876 per year? We’ve got a lot more foolish spending, especially under the current regime!
I think that it just illustrates how absurd and out of control our federal government is. Once the government creates a program, it seems to literally live for eternity.
Long ago, wives and children of war vets would receive a pension for life. Sometime around the 1920s, young women (often in their early teens) would marry Civil War vets for the life-long pension. As a result, the benefit laws were changed.
Currently, widows only get money is through the Survivor Benefit Plan.
I’m more pissed off with our house being closed and the oabma’s thinking it is their house which we pay for and how she moves her family in there on our dime.

Every penny adds up.
Every cent that the government waists must first be taken, by force, from a person who earned it or borrowed from some one else. If just the waste was removed from the Federal Spending we could go a long way to cutting the deficit.
I have ancestors who fought on both sides. I’m not receiving any benefits.
Look, they freed the slaves and kept this country together. You owe them.
If not for them you now would be forced to sing Dixie.

Amazing isn’t it? I had three great-grandfathers in the Civil War and two were wounded. From the Nat’l Archive records that I have on them, they fought tooth and nail with the government to get $5.00 a month in benefits.
According to the Daily Mail article from which I linked that table, the remaining two children receiving Civil War pensions get $867/year.
I saw that, but my wounded relatives only received $5 a month from the 1880s till they died in the 1920s and ‘30s.
If a vet and they are entitled to a benefit they are entitled to that benefit as long as they are eligible no matter how many years may have passed.
If the country cannot keep its promises to its Veterans the game is up .... as our enemies can be counted on keep their promise to destroy the USA...

A contract is a contract. I bet just about any male who was 15-65 was eligible to participate in the 1861-65 miltary olympics, with all the responsibilities and rights that entailed.
The issue we have today is with unearned, vice earned, benefits.
Politicos should NEVER get a military pension unless they served active duty, with the same T&C that everyone lives with.
And now that civil service pensions are even better than military pensions... arrggh!
(Not talking about perfumed prices that stay in for 20 and get promoted due to connections - that is another issue).
My great grandfather was killed in the Civil War...died from wounds received in the battle of Shiloh...where do I apply? :)
