Trying to run a gasoline engine on diesel will just result in it not running or barely running.
HOWEVER, putting gasoline in a diesel can have some very expensive results.

Im not sure about the relative CO2 per joule of diesel vs. gasoline, diesel certainly has more joules per liter (or foot pounds per gallon), but diesel is worse in terms of particulates. Yet diesel generally provides less polution per mile, as the greater energy gets you further down the road.

You are assuming that his Sobb had a catalytic converter, but not necessarily so.
In then early ‘80s there were still lots of vehicles on the road with the standard fill inlet.

No, they cut diesel with gasoline all the time. Especially old, stored diesel they are rehabilitating.
Gasoline engines won’t run at all on diesel but a small amount of diesel mixed in the gas doesn’t matter — it’s just extra lubrication like 2-stroke premix, but it would damage cats.
The one thing you really don’t want is ANY gasoline — even just drops — mixed into kerosene for a kerosene stove.

Putting diesel in a gasoline engine could damage lots of seals, hoses, and o-rings.

Exactly how does one do that? The Diesel nozzle and the Gasoline nozzle are different sizes, The diesel being larger, so it should not have fit in the gasoline intake......
It was easy. What happened in my case was that something caught my attention as I turned from the pump and when I turned back I grabbed the wrong nozzle and there you go.
It may be different now.

Putting diesel in a gasoline engine could damage lots of seals, hoses, and o-rings. What is the mechanism for that? Diesel is not corrosive and it has greater viscosity.

That’s what I’ve heard. My engine would start and idle with diesel, but if I touched the gas pedal it would die. That may have just been some residual gas, though. It did start right up when I drained the diesel, though.

That's my understanding also.
Pre-visit, special agents would have planned and done their work (re: refueling).
Or in this case, “Reid: Sequestration cut out the funding for special agents”

A small amount of gasoline in deisel probably isn’t any different than going from No.1 to No.2, but too much gasoline will create havoc in a diesel.
Per putting diesel into gasoline in small quantities, well, the key is “small quantities”. The same applies to motor oil. It will run, more lubication, more smoke, more carbon, but it will run.
