I wonder what this will do to his standing among some conservatives? For the most part, his libertarian base won't let it deter their support of him, but conservatives might be a little miffed.
Conservatives may want to pay close attention to Paul's ideas about a path to citizenship because it appears what he is proposing is a long and torturous process for the illegals.
Paul's path to citizenship would come with conditions that could make it long and difficult for illegal immigrants. Chief among these, Congress would have to agree first that progress was being made on border security.
Nonetheless, Paul's endorsement of allowing illegal immigrants an eventual way to become citizens puts him in line with a growing number of Republicans who are embracing action on immigration as a way to broaden the GOP's appeal to Latinos. On Monday, a Republican National Committee report called on the GOP to support comprehensive reform, though without specifying whether it should include a pathway to citizenship, which is decried by some conservatives as amnesty.
Paul's move also comes as a bipartisan group of senators is nearing agreement on sweeping legislation to overhaul the nation's immigration laws, an effort that could get a boost from Paul's stance. In an interview, Paul said he could foresee backing the Senate group's emerging bill, although he plans to try to amend it on the floor with some of his own ideas.
Paul's speech is peppered with Spanish phrases from his youth in Texas, references to his immigrant grandparents and praise for Latino culture. He says his party must adopt a new face toward Hispanics and says conservatives must be part of it.
"Immigration reform will not occur until conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation,"

So true. What we have now is in fact amnesty as no one is being prosecuted, many of the illegals vote, plus it's an issue that can always be used to show conservatives as racist.
Both Paul and Rubio are sticking with the border enforcement issue first, asking it be proved that the leak in the dam is stopped before providing a path to citizenship's.
If that were true, it would be better than now, but somehow I keep thinking of all those spending cuts that were made after Reagan raised taxes......
He has just lost his chance for the Presidency
I stand in complete opposition in this issue.
Essentially, I am against the cheapening of the status of Citizen of these United States. By rewarding those whose very first action upon entering this country is a violation of our law, this is exactly what will be accomplished.
Hell no!
“Why is it that nobody in the GOP is talking about mass deportations?”
The time for the mass deportations and sealing of the border was during the George H.W. Bush administration when there was enough popular support for such a move. Instead, Pappy Bush decided not to enforce the recently passed 1986 immigration act. Clinton, Bush II and Obama have continued the lax administration of immigration law. Today’s electorate would not support mass deportations even if Congress and the President had the will to enforce the law.
There are consequences to allowing presidents to decide which laws they will and will not enforce. The current immigration mess is a legacy of Pappy Bush failing to do his Constitutional duty.
Maybe so, but you do not give them full citizenship and allow them to put even more democrat party shills in control. Never, ever.
What makes deportation impossible; Only the will of those in government to do so.
We could get a majority to self deport if we would only stop supporting their existence here.
If we could get the Federal government to make some Common Sense Changes as the Left loves to say the illegals would return to their home countries willingly.
Lets say that we reverse the stupid USSC decision that said that born here means citizen and we reversed that stupid USSC decision that said resident means free education and we vigorously enforced the law that if you knowingly hire illegals you get crippling fines and we did not give illegals ANY kind of welfare benefits.
If they can not support themselves here and we will not give them charity why would they stay?
No other country in the world does these stupid things for illegal immigrants why do we?
I was never that impressed with him and didn’t understand all the gushing on FR. My patience is wearing thin waiting on a congressman who enforces the law.
I’m fine with a ‘torturous’ path to citizenship. One that holds the right to vote out about ten years. And one where they have to ace this test...

He was not one of our better presidents, imho. I don't think that history will treat him well.
I fear what we will be offered during the next election.
Ted Kennedy told us back in 1986 that there would by no more amnesty programs ever again.
Now why would a Democrat lie?
Response: Goodbye Rand Paul.
There is no way a nation ignores its border and immigration policies for 40+ years, then when things get uncomfortable, they all of a sudden get energized.
The U.S. citizenry didn't say jack shiite when the director of INS resigned during the Clinton administration. There is a price for apathy, and the margin call has come in.
You want all the brown skins returned to their country of origin? Too freaking bad. It isn't going to happen because you will never have the votes nor national will to get it done. Your only chance is to take over the public school system so that these kids can be assimulated into American conservative thought. Absent that, you are spinning a fantasy.
Own your apathy.
I concluded awhile back Rand was a liberaltarian posing as a Conservative.
I'm not “miffed” I'm a Conservative who will only vote for a Conservative and that means I wont vote for Paul...
He must have fallen and hit his head! O U C H !
Same as Rubio. The Paulistas were jumping all over Rubio for the same thing.
This is gonna be fun to watch.
Have always realized that Rand isn’t a Conservative any more than his father was. He is a Libertarian just just like Ron Paul.....
While I enjoy his lucid Conservative moments as much as anyone, I won’t be slipping into any sort of idol worship or unthinking political support for the man that seem to be the norm for the Paulites here.
Keep an eye on him???? You bet..... he can’t always be trusted to be Conservative.
Only a damned fool would write that statement. There is usually agreement around here that IF we ever enforced existing laws, then the illegals would gradually self-deport once they could not find consistent work, and that those who did come in contact with law enforcement would be deported.
No round-up of illegals would be necessary. You're just using the old liberal scare tactic that the amnesty pushers have used all through this debate that's been going on since W's two big amnesty pushes.
Nothing logical about what you're writing here. Just typical, worn out scare tactics.
