Whichever is true, drunk from lots of drinking, drugged, or drunk from one drink, the girl should not have been treated as she was. She was stupid (and none of us ever did stupid things at 16 here, right?), the guys took advantage, making her do things while she was catatonic, quite frankly a series of very evil things, and were subsequently convicted of rape.
They “were subsequently convicted of rape.
And they should have been. But that doesn’t excuse her. People who are drunk are held accountable every day in our legal system. Think drunk drivers...
What’s most disturbing to me in all this is the role of the coaches and community. It seems like this town produced a group of guys who believed they were the equivalent of God. Either that, or the equivalent of animals... Maybe animals who have a right to be honored as if they were God...
It is truly disturbing. If the head coach told the guys to get rid of the evidence, and if he threatened a journalist who asked why the kids were not disciplined on the team, and if it’s true that the assistant coaches hosted the parties at which these guys were getting wasted and raping people... these coaches and all the people who think they are doing these guys a favor by revering them like that are in fact creating monsters.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely. It’s true in government and it’s true in other areas of life. That’s what fallen humanity means. People largely do what they can get away with.
What these boys did was awful; the calculating and remorseless way they dehumanized her and themselves is chilling. But I do feel sorry for these boys. They lived by the creed they had seen demonstrated EVERYWHERE - by their coaches, by sit-coms, by the politicians, by their values-free public education, perhaps even by their “church” if they belonged to a “progressive church”. They were supposed to realize that those people were all just lying to them for their own selfish purposes but instead they BELIEVED it. The depravity of the whole society is on display, but the faces that bear the shame are not Piers Morgan and Barack Obama. They are these kids who had the gullibility to take the society’s double-speak at face value.
I hope and pray that these boys will see how deceived they were, that Satan really and truly wants to destroy them and will use any lie at his disposal to do so, and realize that they need forgiveness and restoration. I hope that in prison they will get what they need so that the depraved mind will die and be replaced with a mind that is right. I pray the same thing for the girl and for all the adults involved, as well as those in our society who have given themselves over to depravity.
God offers new beginnings, and it seems there are a lot of people who have been exposed as desperately needing a new beginning. Those of us who have been through the process of repentance realize that there is still hope for all who have fallen.
