A new proposal would require New York City retailers to keep tobacco products out of sight under a first-in-the-nation proposal aimed at reducing the youth smoking rate, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday.
The legislation would require stores to keep tobacco products in cabinets, drawers, under the counter, behind a curtain or in other concealed spots. They could only be visible when an adult is making a purchase or during restocking.
"Such displays suggest that smoking is a normal activity," Bloomberg said. "And they invite young people to experiment with tobacco."

No pity for those New Yorkers who voted this moron into office.
Bloomberg strikes again!
Nanny State PING!
Like appointing his horse to some city bureaucracy?
As far as the national media and populace? He loves it when they hate him. It makes him feel sooooo New York City Superior.
See my comment. It’s becoming obvious these are stunts, MEANT to garner negative attention.
Thanks for the ping!
It does seem as if he's using a checklist.
Next up: shoving a grapefruit into Sarah Palin's face.
Such displays suggest that smoking is a normal activity,” Bloomberg said. “And they invite young people to experiment with tobacco.”
Yet, these same idiots claim that exposing children to homosexual sexuality in kindergarten will not sexualise children. Up is down, black is white, backwards is forwards.
“The dipwad is a it again”
Aww, cut him a break. He’s just exercising the power that many a FReeper was more than willing to give him...
Bloomigula?
As a non smoker, I knew that smoking bans will lead to more of our freedoms being taken away... The sad part is that there where many conservatives (a lot here), who supported such ban cause it got rid of a vice they don’t like.
I won't give him or any of those so-called FReepers a break.
Anyone who supports any of these nanny state edicts does not deserve the moniker of "FReeper" as they go against everything conservatives, and this website, stand for.
Yup.
Put all the beer and liquor away too!
Hide it!
“who supported such ban cause it got rid of a vice they dont like.”
To put it more plainly, there was a contingency of FReepers that supported the usurpation of private property rights so that their clothes wouldn’t stink.
I’m with you FRiend. It is getting worse every day!
“-———gone from there 30 years this past October!”
And my son has been down there for 20 years this summer. They live in Nassau County but he works for The City of New York. They will give it 5 more years to get their daughter out of H.S. and then they are gone.
You are so lucky you escaped when you did.
