Four hundred U.S. Postal Service executives are heading to San Francisco next month for workshops, meetings and a dance party.
And a golf tournament. And a dinner event.
Thats according to a report by KTVU, which found 400 USPS staffers, including the postmaster general, are set to attend the four-day National Postal Forum in March at the Moscone Center in California.
The trip is expected to cost the flailing agency which is pushing to stop Saturday letter delivery due to revenue issues more than $2 million, KTVU reports. An estimated $220,000 is going to spent on exhibit space, according to the news agency.

The way to limit all of these conferences...go ahead and hold them but put them all in cities like Ames, Iowa, or Topeka, Kansas, or Birmingham, Alabama. Put these folks all into three-star hotels.....give $20 a day for food, and let them have their conference. My guess is that half will turn down the deal.
Why don’t they simply jack up the price of postage to $2 per letter. Then money would no longer be a problem.
I say we help push the demise of this arcane, obsolete agency. Utilize the Internet in every way possible; pay bills, electronic receipts, email, etc. then, write “Return to Sender” on every piece of junk mail you receive and put it back in your mail box.
Party for me. No Saturday delivery for you.
Perception is EVERYTHING.
Buncha dumbasses.
They just never get over themselves do they?
More EID stamps!!
In the New America™, our deficit isn't a problem!
Should read, "The trip is expected to cost flailing taxpayers..."
As long as there is a need for certfied legal service with hard copy , and package service tthat will deliver to every US address plus APO/FPO, the USPS is not obsolete.
Heck, it’s one of the few things the national gov does that is actually contemplated by the Founders.
Your junk mail with” return to sender” will be chucked at the post office.
They do not return junk mail.
Junk mail is just that. Junk.
Maybe they could sponsor Lance Armstrong to raise money.
Agreed... Between the unions and congress, they are bound and determined to strangle the organization. We either need to finish the split and make it a totally private corporation or undo the split and make it totally government.
Regarding our small business, the worst part is, they’ve eliminated cheaper classes of international mail, so mailing our American-made products cost far more to international customers than it used to.
The same size packages overseas that used to cost $10 when we sent them “Surface Mail”, now everything has to be sent “Air mail”, which is $55 and up!
Our sales direct to consumer, both national and international, business is way down.
I agree, as a USPS employee. I’m glad they at least make an attempt to self-sustain as an organization, but it’s damned hard to do with a board of directors like Congress. And STUPID leaders like the PMG.
Something happens at every level of government down to the local city council. The idea that to increase revenue means to raise taxes, or in this case price of stamps and service. This ends up having the opposite effect, of course. Less people use the service.
Just like our local municipal golf course, having lost money for several years, they raise rates. This is why they started losing money in the first place. It used to be $7/day for all the golf you want, and it was profitable. Now you’re talking $40 a round if you rent a cart.
A buddy of mine that does shipping every afternoon at his job reported to the local Post Office that due to the recent changes in shipping rates, he’s now shipping more packages via UPS versus the Post Office. How is the Post Office benefiting?
“As long as there is a need for certfied legal service with hard copy , and package service tthat will deliver to every US address plus APO/FPO, the USPS is not obsolete.”
The demand for certain services may not be obsolete but the business model (USPS) for delivery of said services is obsolete, broke. Why not privatize? Perhaps allow competitors to utilize privately owned or paid for mail boxes as an example. There are several possibilities if the government would just get out of the way.
Several years ago the USPS tried to compete in the market by creating eBillpay and Certificate of Authentication capability for certified email as well as several other tools but congress stopped them after UPS et all started whining.
The National Postal Forum is not USPS ~ and in some years UPS and FedEx have actually set up tradefair booths in the conference hall, as have equipment manufacturers (Noting that large mailing houses don't stick those cards, letters and SPRs together by hand these days).
So, raise your hands fellow posters ~ how many of you work for UPS or for countries with long term special contracts with that company? 1?
2?
Most likely all of you!
The founders were fine with creating the USPS and roads to get to them, not necessarily operating them.
