Councilman Kwame Kenyatta and a packed room of Detroiters warned today of an impending revolt against state intervention, urging residents to stock up on canned food and supplies.
Even the Bloods in the hood fight for their territory, Kenyatta said during a 20-minute monologue on the civil rights struggle at todays city council meeting. You are going to have to drag me out of here for me to leave.
Kenyatta cited Frederick Douglass, a former slave who became an intellectual and civil rights icon, because of his position that black people must sacrifice their lives, if necessary, to win freedom and the right to vote. Many in the audience stood up and applauded.
One by one, Detroiters pledged to take to the streets once Gov. Rick Snyder appoints an emergency manager, which is expected Thursday or Friday. Others threatened to block the entrance of city hall.
Save up and purchase food, canned goods and water because you are going to see a new civil rights movement, pledged Marie Thornton, a former Detroit Public Schools Board member. I wont give up my right to vote. We are going to shut down freeways and we are going to disrupt the economic system.
Added Valerie Glenn, a community activist: Make sure you are prepared and you will survive.
Protests so far have been nonviolent. Demonstrators slowed traffic to a few miles per hour on I-75 and I-94 in the past week. But thats mild for whats to come, some warned.
What about black Detroiters who arent prepared to fight?
We have fought for everything we have; how do you sit on the sidelines? Kenyatta asked.
To keep Detroit ruined I guess
They’re all pissed-off about their licence to steal getting revoked.
Burning Detroit to the ground sounds like it will solve MANY problems.
LET’EM!
What economic system is she talking about? Crack retailing?
Just fence the place in and call it a zoo.....
This should be fun to watch.
I guess thievery and stupidity are now civil rights.
“Long live stupidity!”
“We want more government thieves!”
>What about black Detroiters who arent prepared to fight?
What on earth does repairing a corrupted city have to do with race moron? I’m beginning to believe there is an IQ shortage in Detroit.
Perhaps these situations are what those billion hollow points are for?
Still...I do like my 2nd amendment rights.
Didn't work so well in Chicago in 1968 either. There are still parts of the City that have never been re-built and IMO serve as a "reminder."
This is what happens when people with mugabe and mandela-like mentalities are challenged. Expect them to lash out harder as their power structure is threatened, and they lose their grip. I worked quite a few years in and around detroit, and I can say this was expected, and long coming.
Hey if they are going to have an attitude and riot about being completely incompetent, Ohio should just drop leaflets letting normal people know they should seek shelter outside the city in the new protected zones then stop sending money, power and water.
And then when the riot is over they they have burned down their own neighborhoods wait.......
Good luck with that Detroiters. This might be the first test of how Obama will use those MRAPs and some of those 1.6 billion bullets. And uh, drones can see in the dark.
That's what I was thinking. Rise up against whom ? The state appointed executive who will try to save the city from the Kwame Kenyan(s) of the world.
You gotta fight, for your right, to...live in a $#!t-hole?
The voters of Detroit prove that people sometimes never get it and can’t be counted on to do the right thing (not even when their city falls apart). Sometimes we assume that a Chavez or Mugabe couldn’t possibly get elected in a real democratic vote. I give you Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit - a man reelected even when it was obvious he was a crooked thug. Sure, they all cheat in whatever ways they can - but there really are majorities that sometimes vote for these dangerously incompetent idiots. The folks in Detroit have wrecked their city, and they don’t want anything to change.
Fun to watch from a safe distance, if there is one. I can’t believe they found anyone to take the job of emergency manager.
I say, save the money, build and wall and let it fail but don’t let it or the vermin spread. It is damaged beyond repair. You have to destroy it to save it.
It’s gonna be a long hot summer.
Problem is they use it as a reminder of ‘oppression.’ The good thing is that the majority of smart people, black, white or otherwise are gone. But the ones remaining have a choice to make right now. And they will have to live with the outcome.
It took the 101st ABN to end the 1968 riots.
