Penn State trustees: ‘We’re trying to get where we need to be’ [PSU alumni still on attack]
Centre Daily [State College, PA] ^ | March 10, 2013 | Mike Dawson

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State trustee Paul Suhey admits relieving Joe Paterno of his head coaching duties in November 2011 over a late-night phone call was not the right tact.

Stephanie Deviney, another trustee, is certain the whole board feels that way.

“We apologize, we screwed it up as far as how we delivered the message,” Suhey said Friday in an interview. “Our decision, we’re not going to go back on. But we messed that up big time.

“People are still so hurt by that, and you know, damn it, we screwed it up.”

The Paterno decision will go down in the annals as the trigger of when Penn State alumni and diehard fans turned against the board, and the anger has not relented. They email the trustees, write letters — even call them out in advertisements in this newspaper.

But, four trustees, in an interview with the Centre Daily Times’ editorial board, said they are committed to turning the corner, opening up and building on the progress the university has already seen in responding in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky abuse scandal. The trustees — Suhey, Deviney, board Chairman Keith Masser and Paul Silvis — said they hope the university community will meet them in the middle as part of moving forward.

The trustees say they did not fire Paterno, thought they stood behind it as the right decision given the details of the presentment.

“We retired him three weeks early,” Suhey said...

Paterno's salary tops $1 million

Well that does it.

He's guilty.

No more needs to be said.

Now let's indict all the others whose salary tops $1 million.

They must be guilty too.

You guys are too much.

In pronouncing the sentence, Cleland said that Sandusky was a particularly dangerous breed of child molester because he masked his manipulation and abuse of children behind a respectable facade. “It is the remarkable ability to conceal that makes these crimes so heinous,” he said.

Paterno and Folks at Penn State knew.. long before the shower incident was reported.

The incident in that hotel room at the Bowl Game, ended any plausible deniability that the JoePa or Penn State Administration had regarding them “not knowing” exactly what Sandusky was.

From that point forward there is no plausible way for ANYONE in a position of authority in the Penn State organization or the Football program to argue they “had no idea”.

Sandusky was pushed out because of what he did in that hotel room, and it was covered up because those in power knew if it came out it would destroy the program, and harm the school. So instead of handing it over to authorities, they quietly pushed Sandusky out and hushed it up.

It is sad that JoePa’s legacy will be tainted by this, however, it is taint that is justly deserved. You have to completely suspend your brain functions to believe that after the incident at that bowl game that Joe, or other administrators at that school “had no idea”... let alone allowed him continued access to penn state facilities.... then even after that to just “pass it along and think nothing more of it” when someone else comes forward saying the witnessed him abusing a child again, and felt they did what they needed to do.

Reality is simple, Sandusky was JoePa’s friend, he was HAND PICKED to replace him, until that bowl game and that hotel room incident.... suddenly after that, Sandusky is “out” but still around. They knew, they covered up for him to protect their program and the school, and perhaps even to protect a “friend” as well. What was clearly lacking in all this was any effort to protect the children.

There is absolutely no way in light of the facts, that you can conclude JoePa and other folks in the Penn State administrative structure “HAD NO IDEA” post that hotel room bowl game incident. THey knew what this guy had done and was doing, perhaps not ever single incident but they knew what he was and they protected him.

Right -- an incident that no one knew about until the victim came forward 10 years later.

You have to prefabricate better than that.

<>Sandusky was pushed out because of what he did in that hotel room<>

Another one of your prefabrications.

The truth is that Sandusky had already retired with a lucrative emeritus status the previous July 1999, and had just agreed to stay on until the end of the year.

There is no end to your bs is there??? But please don’t let the facts stop you.

In pronouncing the sentence

The defendant must be found guilty to be sentenced to prison. That isn't exonerated, is it?

Why do you defend child molesters?

Was Sandusky exonerated? Yes or no?

No he wasn't.

But he was acquitted of the most serious charge regarding Victim #2 while found guilty of 9 of those most serious charges regarding other victims. Yes or No???

As part of the investigation, authorities went back and took a second look at a report filed to Penn State police in 1998 that alleged Sandusky inappropriately touched a 12-year-old boy as they showered together during a tour of the football locker room.

Yep, I’m wrong.. they knew in 1998 not 1999.

There is no plausible deniability for ANYONE at Penn State post the internal investigation in 1998.

The aplogists for JoePa and Penn State are despicable..

Might want to check

http://blogs.post-gazette.com/scandal/timeline.php

before you keep digging your hole.

“1998 - May 4

Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz is notified of investigation. In confidential notes, he writes the following about Sandusky: “Behavior — at best inappropriate @worst sexual improprieties” and “At min — Poor Judgement.” Later, he writes: “Is this opening of pandora’s box? Other children?”

That’s Administrations reaction to the INTERNAL INVESTIGATION!!!

You and others trying to argue that these folks didn’t cover up for this guy is beyond idiotic. By 1998 it was clear they knew, there is no more plausible deniability left.
